Sri Lanka has formally handed control of a strategic port on its southern coast to China as part of a 99-year lease agreement.
Under a US$1.1 billion (Dh4bn) deal that the Sri Lankan political opposition and trade unions have called a "sell-out" move, Chinese firms now hold a 70 per cent stake in Hambantota port.
The $1.3bn port was built with loans from a Chinese state-owned bank and opened in 2010. But the Sri Lankan government has struggled to repay the debt, with the project incurring heavy losses. Along with loans taken out for other infrastructure development projects, Colombo now owes China a total of $8bn.

The future of Sihanoukville?
Well the opposition never agree with what a government does and as for the unions they’re usually the ones who cripple businesses and public services.
The way I see it is there’s no benefit in China crippling a country financially but there is incentive to improve its infrastructure. Increased GDP means the population have more cash to buy more Chinese products and goods. Win win.
This whole anti Chinese investment initiative is very perplexing.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
I don't think worries about Chinese investment is that perplexing, the same happens with any outside investment, regardless where it is from because people, no matter where you are from, are suspicious of why people from other countries want to spend money there when they can spend it at home. "As in, what do they want from us." I think it seems like it is strictly anti Chinese only because there is so much of it atm. And for clarification, I make no such judgements on Chinese people as whole, I only view the 3 big countries with caution as for their motivations.

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
It’s often not even Chinese (As in PRC) investing, but they do account for 70% of investment, but other nationalities.
Also, posting a headline like that shows what your views are.

My "headline" is relevant because I keep hearing that the reason China is interested in Sihanoukville is because of the port, and this case, while a different circumstance is similar. Now, if it was the US or Russia I would also be saying the same thing, actually I would have and have had a more aggressive stance against American government investment as they have a worse track record.
I think you posted because you’re bored and as the yanks or Russians have already had their go, and ballsed it up, the Chinese are doing it properly, if a little feverish.Gardiguy wrote:If you say so.YaTingPom wrote:It’s often not even Chinese (As in PRC) investing, but they do account for 70% of investment, but other nationalities.

It just gets a little tedious when another Chinese is ruining Cambodia thread pops up. You do know all these English articles are written by people who’ve ripped off maybe two genuine articles and even those were written by people who don’t live here but do read the English Facebook groups and websites. I know because a mate wrote one which was repeated and copied all over the world.
He knows about aslbout as much of China and economics as me. He used to be a car journo!
I see a shit load more Cambodians in SHV working than ever before. They only agree with barang when the question is leading. They won’t dissagree for fear of looking silly.
“Bloody Chinese ruining everything and forcing locals away. What do you think?”
“Yes”
pew, pew, pew, pew!
I agree, the Chinese are ruining what was already a shithole narrative does get a little tiring. Also 100% agree on the recycled ill-informed news that is written about Cambodia. And yes, I was slightly bored this morning. Cheers

I hear Jack Ma retired from hos Alibaba CEO position.
Maybe he realized that just like anyone else, his Cambodia investment requires his full attention

He's "going back to teaching", right? Have you ever seen an interview with him? He was an English teacher before haha.Barang_doa_slae wrote:I hear Jack Ma retired from hos Alibaba CEO position.

I'm making fun of that, but he could be a very interesting guest lecturer in university.
I’ve seen interviews and even as a native English speaker he’s hard work!
