Ali Baba , yes peanuts are cheap but one also needs to eat other nuts as well , for variety and different oils n proteins n vitamins n whatever else they provide, walnuts, almonds , avocados, chestnuts , etc.
Berries are classed as superfoods and in vegan land not all fruits are created equal. Likewise veg, one cannot survive on just carrots n potatoes, there needs to be a variety of colour as well as different types of veg, root n leaves plus the cruc... type which I do not know how to spell such as cauliflower n broccoli.
Seeds add more to a diet which is why a lot of breads now include seeds n not just grains.
In order to get all the nutrition from ones food a vegan needs to eat 5 times a day inc at least 5 different fruits, citrus, starch n berries as well as basic apples.
Five different types of veg inc leaf, root and stem.
Plus a couple of servings of nuts n seeds and of course bread, pasta, rice, lentils, beans and potatoes.

I should add that two n half years ago I met a vegan round the world cyclist. However, after only 12 months on the road he had to convert his bike into an Ebike as he was finding the lifestyle too tough plus he only rode about 200k a week as he spent the rest of the time searching for foods n recovering from his assisted rides.
Ride steel , eat meat n drink beer. My new motto after love, live life.

Well said Harace.
Which is why those vegetarian animals of super strength (gorillas & elephants) spend most of their waking life foraging and eating. No time for forums or other mentally taxing pursuits.

I've been following a plant based diet for the last 3 years and haven't had any problems. I don't make any special efforts to get nutrition I just eat fruit for breakfast and veggie stir fries for lunch and dinner. I never eat berries because they're expensive here and eat nuts sporadically but I get the bread that includes nuts and seeds because I like the texture and crunchy bits. The only animal product I eat on a regular basis is cheese.
Animals don't cook their food so their digestion is less efficient. Primates have larger intestines and smaller brains than humans because of this.TheGrimReaper wrote: ↑Thu Jul 04, 2019 7:57 pmWell said Harace.

Would you be reluctant to befriend a Hindu, Muslim or Jew due to the lack of beef or pork (respectively) served at dinner? When we have vegan friends round for a meal, my wife always prepares their food separately and with fresh products. When we go to them for a meal, I am only served a vegetable meal. They will not prepare or cook meat. I suffer this as they are good friends and neighbours in all other ways.

Ali Baba I have some serious questions. Do you do a lot of exercise? And what about eggs! Do you eat them or not? I remember meeting you about 4 years ago and you were a chubby kinda guy, not fat but not slim. How about now! Have you lost a lot of weight?

Absolutely the most stupid question this week. We are talking about Vegans not religion. Both the religions you quoted eat meat.
Religion is an entirely different question unless you worship and prey to the great God Veggie.
Time will tell on your diet. I and the vast majority still maintain that a sensible balanced diet of fresh foods is the way to live and not a restricted diet. There are many nationalities that eat raw meat and veg. Try asking for a steak in a French restaurant and chances are it will still be alive and kicking unless you ask for bien, bien, bien cuit. Try getting French (Belgium?) fries in Russia, they will be raw and uncooked.

Veggie "meat" is just about the most disgusting product ever invented.
There is not a single veggie "meat" product that tastes anything like or has the texture of real meat.

If vegans want to kill themselves, I have no issue with that. No one can deny that humans are omnivores and meat is an essential part of our diet. If anyone wants to be a vegan, they have every right to be one. Just don't start preaching a healthier than meat sermon to the rest of us.
Eat your veggies and leave the rest of us to eat what we want.
And if you read further....
"Are Beyond Meat’s plant-based burgers healthier than red meat? Dietitians say no."

It's what I have always said. Processed foods are the problem and a balanced diet of fresh food that includes meat is the best nutritional way to live.

Interesting that Vegans could be responsible for destroying the planet.

I play sports 3 or 4 times a week and walk my dog everyday and yes I went from 100kg following an ice cream binge to 77kg today. I rarely eat eggs themselves and don't eat baked goods often. Cheese is the only animal product I eat on a weekly basis.
You used the word 'suffer' to describe forgoing meat for one meal, which is a pretty strong word. It seemed logical that you'd be reluctant to 'suffer' any restriction during any meal.TheGrimReaper wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 3:46 pmAbsolutely the most stupid question this week. You ever hang out with any Jains? They don't eat any meat.
There are Olympic athletes who are vegan. There are also elite bodybuilders who are vegan. Clearly humans can not only survive but actually thrive without animal products. No one can deny that humans are omnivores and meat is an essential part of our diet.

Why are you linking some random guy talking out of his arse? He provides no sources or citations to back up any of his claims.

You are on a looser lady. There is no medical proof whatsoever that being a Vegan is healthier than being an omnivore.
I used the word suffer as a idiom. There are many meanings of the word suffer. My fault for not stating which category I was using.
I have quoted several links but to satisfy your craving for proof from sources other than the fake news newspapers......

And at the end you prove my point. Vegans are always trying to convert omnivores to an unnatural diet. No one and I would emphasise, no one with half a braincell or more can deny that a sensibly balanced omnivore diet of fresh foods is far healthier than a pure Vegan one.
As already mentioned. You have to be well off to afford the supplements required in a Vegan diet. Add to that the fact that over 90% of soya milk is from genetically modified strains and you move into the GMO argument. Then throw in the fact that a move to Veganism would affect the planet negatively and you have a pretty damned good argument against Veganism.
Eat sensibly, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables with small amounts of meat and no processed foods. That is what we try to stick to but I would never try to convert a Vegan if that is their chosen path.

I never made that claim so whatever. What's a 'looser lady' anyway? Did you mean loser? You are on a looser lady. There is no medical proof whatsoever that being a Vegan is healthier than being an omnivore.
You're the only one in this thread arguing that one diet is superior to another. All I did was point out that there are vegans living happy successful lives without animal products. Then you mention GMOs in an attempt to muddy the waters and add an unfounded claim that veganism is worse for the planet than animal agriculture. Given that it takes 10kg of feed to produce 1 kg of beef with plenty of planet warming methane and gallons upon gallons of shit and piss as a by product I find it hard to believe that eating tofu instead could possibly be worse. And at the end you prove my point. Vegans are always trying to convert omnivores to an unnatural diet.
This sounds reasonable to me. I'd add that white meat is healthier then red.Eat sensibly, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables with small amounts of meat and no processed foods.

Grim Reaper: Did you bother to read your Good Housekeeping link? It is an opinion piece with little factual evidence. It is a fact your body metabolizes complex carbs and proteins far more efficently from raw fruits, vegetables and juices.
Freedom is not a state. It is an act. It is not some enchanted garden perched high on a distant plateau.. Freedom is a continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society.-John Lewis

So for the record, you are saying that a vegan diet is healthier than a carefully balanced omnivore one.
