I don't think it will be anything like the 90s. The Chinese will feed the Koreans because it isn't in China's interest to have millions of hungry refugees flooding into their country.
I don't trust nknews. They are pretty obviously a front for the CIA.
They interview defectors and unsurprisingly most of them are critical of the Korean government. They don't do interviews with the many defectors who regret moving to the south. Food insecurity has been a problem for the country for decades so they might actually be right on this one.

A simple Google search nets 163 articles on North Korea's alleged food shortages.

Paranoia over COVID-19 likely contributed to North Korea closing its borders to China and worsening the food crisis, with increased border restrictions imposed in January 2020. Since then, China and North Korean trade has fallen far below pre-pandemic levels, NK News reported.
According to the GAC data, in May, North Korean imports from China totaled $2.7 million, a sharp dropoff from the high of $28.78 million in April. North Korean exports to China followed a similar trajectory, dropping from $1.85 million in April to $749,000 in May.

I hadn't realised quite how tightly the border was controlled. Reportedly the Chinese Ambassador to North Korea has been allowed into the country, two years after he was appointed, making him and accompanying staff the first known people to enter the country in almost three years.chkai chgout wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 2:56 pmParanoia over COVID-19 likely contributed to North Korea closing its borders to China and worsening the food crisis, with increased border restrictions imposed in January 2020.

Not sure what to make of Kim Jong Un's latest move; sacking the Chief of General Staff and ramping up arms production to prepare for war. It may simply be a matter of cashing in on the Russo-Ukraine War as demand from Russia for munitions is certainly high.

What is the significance of the removal of General Pak Su il? Does anyone know anything about him? For all I know he was removed for incompetence or corruption or being in the wrong clique and being politically outmaneuvered and his departure doesn't signify any meaningful policy change.
Kim has been talking about preparing for war since he came into power. He likes to bluster so I don't think his recent statements are cause for alarm. The DPR Korea hasn't been in a position to fight a war with the south for decades. South Korea has a much larger population, a much stronger economy, and a capable, fully modernized military. If the DPR Korea started a war, America and Japan would be dragged into it on the side of the south.
DPR Korea possesses a small but very dangerous arsenal of nuclear weapons courtesy a few rogue Ukrainian scientists. The world does have to take the regime seriously but I can't imagine them starting a war that they have no possibility of winning.
I think it is a cash grab.

North Korea appears to be abandoning the idea of reunification and taking a position of a separate nation engaged in hostilities with its Southern neighbour. Reports are the huge Reunification Arch has been demolished.
It marks a significant change in policy, however is difficult to see this as a precursor for conflict given North Korea just shipped a significant number of artillery shells to support Russia in their war against Ukraine.

South Koreans have lived under occupation for so long that many of them are thoroughly brainwashed and unwilling to live in a socialist society. The fertility rate in the south is one of the lowest in the world. The DPR Korea is a poor country and they do not have the resources to take care of the aging population in the south. I can't blame the DPR Korea for not actively pursuing reunification. There are too many structural problems in the south.
South Korea has a larger population and a bigger economy. They receive military assistance from imperial powers like America and Japan. The DPR Korea cannot possibly win a war against the south.
It is better for the DPR Korea to adopt a defensive posture.

Ah yes, the brainwashed southerners. The polar opposite of the northerners that are totally not brainwashed.
The South Korean government silences critics and indoctrinates the population in government schools. A few powerful families control most of the economy and media. Despite this, I think the levels of censorship in the DPR Korea are actually worse than in South Korea. The South Korean regime tolerates all sorts of goofy cults but the DPR Korea has sentenced Christians to years of forced labor merely for proselytizing their faith. The South Korean government generally leaves citizens alone as long as they stay out of politics and pay taxes. On the other hand there is legislation concerning acceptable forms of art and expression in the DPR Korea.
South Korea does imprison artists for producing pro-DPR Korea material. The regime has even sentenced citizens to years in prison for merely possessing pro-DPR Korea artwork. As bad as this sounds, dissidents who face persecution in South Korea can at least expect to endure harsh but livable conditions in South Korean prison. The DPR Korea also punishes citizens for thought crimes but the conditions in their prisons are much worse.
