Scambodia: Cambodia Scams and Scammers
Motor Cycle Rentals Scams
A foreigner will rent a motorbike and will sign a contract. He or she will park the bike outside of their hotel overnight and the next day the bike is gone. The hire shop will demand the full cost of a new replacement bike. Does this always involve the same hire shop? Post your details here.
Keyboard Loggers at Internet Cafes
Accusations have come in about certain internet shops in Phnom Penh. Apparantly some have software installed that records details which have resulted in transfers being made from foreign bank accounts. At least two people claim to have only used one particular internet café and then had problems with their bank accounts in Barangland. Share your information here.
Beauty Sleep
A forum member recently had a bad experience with a bargirl he had picked up and taken to a hotel. After kissing her, he said he felt dizzy and passed out. When he woke up, his cash, watch, and mobile phone were gone. Has this happened to you too?
Memory Loss
A forum member needed his computer fixing in PP. The shop fixed it but it ran real slow, He opened it up and guess what? Somebody had removed the 512Kb of ram and put in a single 128k Dramm chip instead. Report problems with computer shops here please.
Tea Junctions
More info can be found here
Fagin's Brat Pack
We've all met the urchin flower sellers who proliferate around the river side and who are organised by professional handlers. Not long ago I had an email from a tourist who claims that on two occasions, a junior artful dodger distracted him whilst attaempting to pick his pocket.
Has this happened to you too? Post the details here.
Short Change & Fries Please
I expect such scams now as a matter of course and always check my change carefully. Just today at the Zebra Cookware shop in Soriya I saved myself a couple of dollars. Of course, it could have been a genuine mistake on the seller's part, or she could have been trying to cheat a barang. Report the short changers on this thread.
This is a far from comprehensive list of scams, so if you know more then please add them. Plus details of the scammers, of course.

Sopheak Computers on Road 3 in Battambang switched Kingston Ram 1024MB with a much cheaper generic module on my laptop when it was in for a routine clean. Of course he continually denies to this day doing so.KiR wrote:Memory Loss
Neekra LTD in Phnom Penh, a Toshiba service center, failed on 6 attempts to repair a faulty keyboard under warranty wasting my time and money with transit from Battambang.
Too many times in too many places. I doubt it is always on purpose but repeat offenders remove the doubt.KiR wrote:Short Change & Fries Please
I have had many bad experiences at bars. After drinking at them I find myself also dizzy and passing out only to wake the next day with substantially less money then the previous evening. Time to re-open the x-files on this one...KiR wrote:Beauty Sleep
Yo Fox,
How about the charming queen you have for a neighbor (White Rose) who short changed me and practically ran out of your shop as soon as I uttered, "thanks"?
Man, I can't forget the look on her face as soon as I walked into her shop. Didn't even have to open my mouth for her to stick her hand into her pocked to pull out a 10 spot and embarrassingly place it on my outstretched hand. Classic . . .
I thought she'd put up a fight.

for technical people engage in business to swap(steal) stuff like that is very unethical. ethical class must be taught to these people before they're allowed to get license to open such business.
exception of car mechanics, at least in usa, they are just common thieves.

Great thread. Why did nobody do this before? Here's another one:
Petrol pump attendants failing to reset the counter before filling up your vehicle, so you get the previous customer's bill added onto yours! Caught me out the first time, but after that I've watched the counter like a hawk every time. Happened again today at the Caltex on the corner of Sihanouk and Monivong, but I saw it and stopped him before actually put any petrol in. He made out all apologetic with a grin, but I'm sure it wasn't an accident. He'd just put 2 dollars' worth into a Honda Cub, which the customer had paid for and left, and I'm sure he thought he could put the nozzle straight into my tank without resetting, and have me pay for that 2 bucks' worth again, as well as my own tank full.
I usually use Caltex stations, and I've had them try this on 4 seperate occasions. I don't know if it happens at other stations too, but I wouldn't be surprised. Be aware.

Thanks for the contribution Manboobs, but I fail to see how a journalist's blog with two posts (the last nearly a year ago) has anything whatsoever to do with scamming and the title of this thread. And anyway, the word 'scambodia' has been used on many websites going back years (Sharkeys website in 1999 certainly had a 'scambodia' section). Probably even before you'd ever heard of, or visited this country or had become the World's Dreariest Living Cambodia Smartarse.
Now be a be a good janitor and put those desks back in rows. Oh and don't forget to turn the classroon lights off when you've finished sweeping up.

I was figuring on making an occasional habit of dining at the new(ish) Indian restaurant on 104 before hitting the bars (doesn't do to drink on an empty stomach, what what). Food was fine on my first and only visit; however, I was 'accidently' short-changes by $5. I was given a full and profuse apology and all that, but once bitten ...

one way to avoid this is to verify the serial number with whomever you are giving it to.. pump attendants at caltex will often do this with you whether you suspect them or not...Birdy wrote:Pay your bill with a $20,$50 or $100 only to have the guy take it away and return with a forged note claiming it was the one you gave him .
He then gives you the note and asks for another.

it is said that some merchants in pp(or cambo in general) were forced to accept some fake bills($100 notes) as real ones in transaction of goods for money, if they don't they won't be viewed as favorable business partners. usa should ask the cambo gov't to get tough on this or send their secret service to monitor such activities and arrest those who use fake imperial dollars intentionally.
