DRUG USERS FREED BY SVAY RIENG COURT
Svay Rieng provincial court on Friday released a couple arrested in Bavet town on June 18 for drug distribution and trafficking, under the reasoning that the suspects were just drug users and were not actually traffickers. A Svay Rieng provincial military police official stated that 47-year-old Mam Sovun and his Vietnamese wife, 20-year-old Leng Ghong Tham, were arrested last month in a guesthouse while in possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia, two cellphones and an artificial penis.

COMEDIAN PREVAILS IN FRAUD LAWSUIT
A 62-year-old man was sentenced Monday by Phnom Penh Municipal Court to six months in prison and ordered to pay US$1,000 in compensation to You Sok Sothea, a comedian better known as Ka Choy, whom he was convicted of defrauding. Rainsy Chan Dara was paid $4,000 by the comedian on assurances he could get her a job in the National Assembly. His failure to do so upset You Sok Sothea, leading her to demand her money back from the con man.

MAN STABS AND KILLS NIECE, CONFESSES
A man who stabbed a 14-year-old girl to death in broad daylight on Tuesday as she rode her bicycle to buy food near her home in Kampot's Dang Toung district, was captured by police on Wednesday. The killer was identified as Kang Phos, 27, an uncle of victim Ghan Chan Than. After his arrest, the perpetrator told police that his niece had cursed at him after he jokingly crashed his bicycle into hers. The suspect added that he found his niece's language so offensive that, in his blinding rage, he couldn't help stabbing her 11 times. RASMEY KAMPUCHEA

PUSHERS PINCHED IN BATTAMBANG Two drug dealers were arrested by Battambang provincial police who raided their houses in on Friday morning in compliance with a provincial court warrant. Twelve yama pills and drug paraphernalia were confiscated. The accused were identified as 53-year-old Chhay Engly and 43-year-old Meth Ly. The suspects said they bought the drugs from Banteay Meanchey province for 14,000 to 15,000 riels (US$3.38 to $3.62) per pill and sold them at 18,000 to 20,000 riels per pill. In just about every police blotter someone has been drinking GIN. Is this just the PPP's word for alcohol or do the people in the provinces ONLY drink GIN?  Alcohol is necessary so that a man can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts

FOREIGNERS FIGHT ON STREET 51 An Australian, a Scotsman and an Irishman walked into a bar Thursday night and started bashing each other, municipal police said. A security guard at the establishment – the Walkabout Hotel and Bar on streets 51 and 174 – sustained a head injury while trying to break up the scuffle. Neighbours described the event as not uncommon. The three men were taken into custody and will face charges in connection with the incident, police said.
