Festive Khmer music - where?
Festive Khmer music - where?
Over this last week you hear a lot of this festive Cambodian lively music being played in the streets, by the neighbors, several different songs many of which sound pretty good. Kind of the high-tempo jingle nonstop beat sound. Have done a google and youtube search but results weren't fruitful - only got this teenage love ballad pop-wannabe stuff. Anyone know where to download some of these songs, or if not perhaps a good cd-shop that would let me play and buy? Thanks.
its all shit, except for some of the 60s n early 70s stuff. unless you are the sort who likes westlife, aqua n boyzone. then it will be right up your street.
It's probably "romvong".. The style of music I mean. They have a lot of Khmer New Year songs that all the biggest stars sing. It's kind of like the upbeat loog thung in Thailand, the Isaan/Lao morlum or the lam in Laos. I guess it's a matter of taste, but I actually like it a lot. Not only the Khmer folk music, but the Thai and the Lao versions too. Then there's Khmer Surin romvong.. which is basically the same as the Khmer romvong.
Here's a playlist from youtube with Khmer New Year romvong songs.. You can see for yourself if it's what you were looking for.

Many videos are filmed in the provinces and show a lot of the traditional games being played, the dancing and singing.. and the general horseplay the Khmer people get up to during Khmer New Year.

I totally agree Serzal. My actual favourite tune on the planet of 'Trot' - the Khmer New Year song that accompanies the very pagan dance with the horse, the stag and the witches with long fingernails. It's absolutely hypnotic. I first experienced it in an hour-long performance at a festival in Siem Reap 5 years ago and it really did put me in a trance. I've looked for it and other festive Khmer songs in CD shops and on the internet. Unbelievably, nothing of the sort exists.Someone really needs to record these traditional festive songs before the youth of today forgets them forever.
I came, I argued, I'm out

Is Khmer Surin romvong the same as Khmer Surin Gan Treum? I used to love the Surin Gan Treum bars, some quite superb music and always a lot of visual bizarreness to observe along with the dancing girls...doktor_d wrote:It's probably "romvong".. Agree with Doc D and JC.
Get the music CDs or Karaoke CDs from your favourite DVD shop.
I've got nearly 10 CDs with Cambodian festival music, all from one of the stores in Sovanna.

Gan treum/kantreum/กันตรึม is more up-beat.. noticably faster than romvong and other styles. To be honest there are so many different styles of Khmer and Khmer Surin music that many times I can not tell them apart. The romvong, gan treum, romkbach, lam leav and saravan styles all sound fairly similar. To me anyway.. I imagine experts will disagreeJacked Camry wrote:Is Khmer Surin romvong the same as Khmer Surin Gan Treum?
