Same old TEFL questions
I've got a couple of friends who are looking at Cambodia and Vietnam for teaching. They are Irish, one has a BA and one doesn't, but they both have their TEFL certificates.
My understanding is that Cambodia is more fun, but Vietnam pays more. Is that true?
Can you tell me what sort of pay they can expect to get? And where does one find jobs here? Can they sort it out in advance or do they need to wait until they get here?

Vietnam usually pays more but not always. As for Cambodia being more fun, it depends on your definition of what fun is I guess. If they want to apply for a job in Vietnam, they will need to apply from abroad and get their visa from abroad. I once was offered a job in Nha Trang, and I was told I would need to contact the Vietnam embassy in my home country in order to get my papers sorted. As for Cambodia, they can just come on a tourist visa and apply once there. As a rule, people with actual TEFL qualifications tend to go to Vietnam and it is true that the pay is usually better. They can always come to Cambo for week ends or holidays.

Pay is pretty much always better in Vietnam unless you have a good gig like Hemingway. Fun is a matter of personal opinion and preferences so that's for them to find out. I also know people who got jobs in Vietnam while over there so you definitely don't need to apply from abroad. Just get there, apply at a bunch of places, get a job, then they usually sort you out for a work visa (plus most schools give you paid weekend "holidays" for visa renewals). I'm thinking of working in Vietnam soon enough. The average gig literally pays double what the average one in Cambodia pays.

Thanks!
Can you tell me what sort of pay they can expect to get? Is it around $10/hr?
Is there anywhere online they can look for jobs? Or is it the sort of thing they need to wait until they get here to do?

If they don't have a BA, they technically can't get a visa in Vietnam and most schools want this as a minimum. In Cambodia, however, you don't need a BA but it will help but as long as you have a TEFL, you should be ok. And yes, you can expect around $10 ph in Cambodia.

Jess, did you look for a job once you arrived? How long did it take you to find a place?Jessb52 wrote:If they don't have a BA, they technically can't get a visa in Vietnam and most schools want this as a minimum. Yeah, I got a job when I arrived - it took 3 days to find a job but this was for kindergarten, but if you're looking for a high school it may take slightly longer. In general, your friends will be fine finding a job, just dress smart, be punctual, have a good cv etc.
One of the big things that got me my job was experience, anything where you have worked with children in any capacity, big it up the best you can!
Good luck!
Jess

She forgot to mention that she is a 20 something female so as a kindergarten teacher that is all that's required. From the couple interviews I have managed to get it looks more like $7/hr with no experience. Also an age limit of 35-45 is common.
Loved the add for a native teacher with a degree + experience aged 18-35

Will your friend be able to continue drinking at Garage if she becomes an English teacher?

That's a different friend! But these two friends would most certainly start drinking at Garage if they got a job in Phnom Penh. They are both under 30 and good-looking (like all of my friends) so they would probably land a pretty good job here.SunSan wrote:Will your friend be able to continue drinking at Garage if she becomes an English teacher?

In all seriousness, the average wage I would say if they have no experience is ~8-10$/hr in Cambodia and probably a tad under 20$ in Vietnam. To find a job they have to do like anyone else: do the rounds handing out CV's. It's true: if they are young pretty girls they'll find a job easily. But it;s also true that female teachers rarely stick for long around here, but it doesn't seem to dissuade the schools from hiring them. If you don't mind me asking, what do you do Giblet? I was always under the impression you were teaching yourself.
