When I lived in India I was never paid to be white, but I was invited to many an event by my "social betters" so that they could parade "their" farang.

Didn't read your links, but as for being invited to numerous events, - this will absolutely, definitely happen if you're working with or dealing with locals. 'Foreigner on Parade"! For sure.
"Oh, look! They've invited a foreigner. They really are doing well!"

Nowadays, I only accept wedding invites from people that I've known for a few years.
I can send the wife to attend the wedding of her newest best friends that moved in next door two weeks ago.

Yeah, wedding invites are the biggest "token white person" event ever. I won't go anymore unless I know the people very well or have nothing else to do. To be fair they'll also invite just about any khmer (he's the friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of the neighbours type of deal).
