Got a new ISP, and am not convinced they're giving what I'm paying for... again.
Speeds are variable, and Ubuntu system manager and Opera download manager both tell me I'm getting around 1/5 (20%) to 1/2 (50%) of the 1mb/s speed I should be getting. Speedtest.net shows it as faster, but with inconsistent speeds on retests.
Not sure how to interpret the following, or what "ping" and "jitter" even are... seems the farther away the server, the better the test results?
Annoying, as in practice/testing, this 1mb/s fibre connection is actually slower than my old wimax when downloading maps from my own unrestricted bandwidth U.S. server.
Does anyone know what may be wrong so that I can approach my ISP with this?
Ping test grades
Add's to latency ie, How long it takes for the packet to go there /back. Typically longer is worse eg Satellite Internet has terrible ping times (speed of light issues to orbit etc). Especially an issue in FPS gaming, as you get shot before you even get a chance to move
I know you're a Linux aficionado but in Windows at the command prompt you can ping an IP to check for latency, ping and hops eg "ping microsoft.com"
I have only ever seen this used in the audio world, in relation to DAC's, it's an issue to do with mistiming on the frequency. In that respect i's mainly of interest to those who are particularly anal about their audio.
As to seeedtest, be careful using it as a reliable source. eg I get decent results on the Cellcard 3G network using speedtest and crap connection speed in real life, the EDGE connection with BEE is often better.
Speaking of maps I have the RCG and JICA maps all sorted in Oziexplorer, I kept forgetting to let you know. I can email you the configuration files if you want. PM me an address to send them to you if you're still interested. I use them on my Andrioid phone using Ozi explorer.
Thanks for the maps files - email address is cambodiamaps (at) gmail.com
I'll set up a new page for them and link up to the Ozi website. Any notes/credits/links/info you'd like to add to their page?
...Reminds me, I've a scan for Moody to get finished.
Yes, a credit to you for all your hard work.
The maps also work on the OZI Andriod version if you convert the maps first using the free Ozi map convert program, I have used some of them in Cambodia on my Motorola Defy+ Android phone.
Sir I resemble that remark...it's actually rather important In distinguishing good vs shitty digital audio quality.

Does your phone have a built in GPS receiver, and if so, can Ozi follow your progress/route on a map on your cellphone when you're moving around Cambodia? That would be useful, and is something I've been trying to get sorted.
No email received yet.
I think it may be an adopted term, here. Google tells me it's something to do with variance in speeds or "consistency of latency".
I'm none the wiser.
Yes to the GPS receiver and yes to the "track logging feature" from within Ozi . There are usage issues, mainly device specific.
I sent it this morning, i will check when i get back to the Hotel. Using Tapatalk sucks. Am in PP until tomorrow, grabbing an MTB before heading back to SHV.
That's something I'm going to have to try - just to find a suitably equipped phone. According to someone with an interest who was recently here as a tourist, it also looks possible that a similar use for the maps may be possible with iPhones, but as I understand it, their "GPS" ability is really cellphone-mast triangulation... she's investigating further.
Got the Ozi files, much appreciated. Will get them online next weekend.
I have not drunk the Apple Kool Aid so I can't say for certian but AFAIK they do have a GPS. She may be getting confused (or I may be) in terms of maps i.e if you are out of cellular range you can't download the maps, as they donwload as needed to save storage. If you jailbreak, i think you can force download large chunks into the cache if you know you will be out of GSM range. Once again I am not completely sure. Also, lot's of the retail routable software allows you to download maps all at once but there are none I know of that have maps for Cambodia. eg co-pilot, tom tom, Sygnic etal
Not sure of any raster based moving map software (ie suitable for the RCG / JICA maps) for the Iphone ?
On a side note, I do have some mapping for my Garmin 3760 that usesOpenstreet's stuff for Cambodia, that seems to be reasonable but that's a different kettle of fish. I have added to Openstreet before but never in Cambodia. I have not yet used any of the Openstreet mapping software on my phone.
The Motorola Defy/ Defy+ is a little more robust then most of the Andriod phones, shock proof and water proof but the screen is a little smaller, so it can make it a little "trickier" to use with big fingers but on the plus side it's very pocketable. I can confirm Ozi for Andriod works on my Moto Defy+.
PS I here Ubuntu is to support tablets / smart phones in upcoming releases, that may be of interest to you.
I haven't got/used an iPhone either, just going by a report.
She was using the .jpg images and had tiled them already for the iPhone. Gave some app details - I'll dig them out later today.
Definitely, I'll keep an eye out for that.
She was using an iPad, not an iPhone. Doh . Phone navigation on the brain, here.
Seems things are moving along nicely in the iWorld.
The iPad / iPad 2 has a GPS in the 3G + Wifi model. I think the GPS is in the 3G chipset, which would explain why it's not in the WiFi only models. Possibly she has the WiFi only model ? I have no idea about the upcoming iPad 3.
I did a test this morning, started Ozi on Android, put the phone in the backpack and headed off for a test ride. I copied the track log across to the notebook PC and produced a few screen shots using various maps FYI.
Ozi plot using the appropriate RCG map
Ozi using the appropriate JICA Mp
We went for a swim at Otres Beach after a ride yesterday, awesome !!
We seem to have moved considerably from the original title !
