168 Sorya Bus racist abuse from staff S'ville
Waiting for a friend on a 168 Sorya Bus to arrive from Phnom Penh on Wednesday, 14 March around 12.20, at Sihanoukville bus station I witnessed some disgraceful, racist comments by a member of Sorya transport staff against a foreigner customer of theirs.
I was sitting down waiting when the ticket office manager of 168 Sorya Transport turned to another Khmer worker (wearing a Capitol T shirt) pointed to a foreigner customer of Sorya boarding one of their buses and with a sneering laugh shouted "Chikay Shkoor!" (Crazy Dog). Calling someone a "dog" in Cambodia is the lowest insult you can give. It means low street vermin. And "Chikay", or dog, is what they call their foreign visitors throughout Cambodia. I am sick and tired of hearing Cambodians call me and other foreigners a dog in Sihanoukville but this is the first time I have heard a member of staff of a large company like 168 Sorya Bus Co. use it call one of its own foreign customers.
Well, I certainly won't be using their company anymore, including their route to Ho Chi Minh city or anywhere else. And the next time you are thinking of booking a ticket with 168 Sorya Bus Co, consider this, they think you are "a dog" or "the lowest street vermin".

Pet name for my wife, that: "Srei Schkai Schko'ut"! KenS will appreciate the poetic alliteration.

If they said this to me I would call them motherfuckers, in Khmer and English, and loud enough to make them lose face.
However, I am interested in what provoked this insult, as most Khmers are extremely polite (excluding those who use the term 'strong legs' too easily).
I do not believe that the customer boarded/ intended to board the bus without incident and that a Khmer employed by a company made this kind of remark unprovoked.
A few years ago, some Israeli backpacker scum threatened me with death after I tried to stop them threatening a Khmer receptionist because they didn't get a favourable exchange rate - to the tune of Riel 1000, wow, what a huge amount.
I suspect u came in at the tail-end of the conversation and heard what you did.
Do tell.

I've never heard a khmer call myself or anybody else a dog for no reason other than being foreign, yet your talking as if they do it all the time.
I have a lot to learn.
I thought that dog was a prized meal.

Shkoor looks like a funky way of transliterating sugar. Maybe 'sugar dog' is a term of endearment.brookspring wrote:"Chikay Shkoor!" (Crazy Dog). Tell us more, brookspring.
maybe the Pom who ripped off the drug dealer decided to leave town ?
Is "Chikay Shkoor" supposed to be "Ch'gai Ch'gout"? if so, then it could have been anything.. Maybe it was Ch'ngai? and not Ch'gai.. or "Chikay" as you call it
I've never heard any Khmers call barangs "dog" before either. I've also found most Khmers to be very polite.

Alcohol is necessary so that a man can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts

I think DD is right. Your mate could have been getting a sweet piece of ass right now from some hard body who had been referring to him as 'delicious sugar', but instead, you two are all charged up about racial injustices and kvetching on the internet. Fuck.

I must be going deaf then, because I've never heard it.And "Chikay", or dog, is what they call their foreign visitors throughout Cambodia.
It was probably "Going far, sugar?" which counts as sexual harassment rather than racial abuse. Is "Chikay Shkoor" supposed to be "Ch'gai Ch'gout"? if so, then it could have been anything.. Maybe it was Ch'ngai? and not Ch'gai.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
