I came, I argued, I'm out
There's at least one forum on Cambodia, one on Sihanoukville in English language. One on Cambodia in French, one German, one Russian who else I forgot? I've read here that number of expats might well be in tens of thousands, so, naturally someone will try to cash in on it one day. There whole bunch of expats, ranging from of East India selling rags on dusty markets to some Muslim Africans staying in Cham ghettos, so there a whole world of them. And Frenchman saw only westerners and only sexpats, who might even be in minority.
I would not buy a book, as I see it's a sort of cash in. The same you will see the novels about bar girls etc. like you see in Thailand, maybe some jail stories .. whatever retellelling the same good old Guns Girls and Ganja in Cambodia. Anyways, that guy was the first and the most successful, he'd be rich were it a commercial release, read through generations of Riverside sitters.

Thai's have a saying, "Roo Mahk, Mai Dee"Gaudente wrote:I think the two lines comment written by Jeremy nicely sums it up with no need to waste time and 12 bucks to read the book:

to know to much is no good
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Could easily be said about many people in most countries.Phuket2006 wrote:Thai's have a saying, "Roo Mahk, Mai Dee"Gaudente wrote:I think the two lines comment written by Jeremy nicely sums it up with no need to waste time and 12 bucks to read the book:

That could be the 2012 Republican Presidential campaign slogan.Phuket2006 wrote:Thai's have a saying, "Roo Mahk, Mai Dee"Gaudente wrote:I think the two lines comment written by Jeremy nicely sums it up with no need to waste time and 12 bucks to read the book:

Sure, ignorance is bliss, but knowing what's going on around you, warts and all, is infinitely more satisfying. That Gaudente supports said position only further confirms to me that making the effort to learn the language and understand the culture is the way to go. For mongers whose only interest is getting pissed and sticking their pee-pee in local girls, sure, why bother, it only complicates things when you see them as humans with their own thoughts and feelings. As the Kinks once sang "don't stop to think, have another drink". For the simple-minded and twisted, this is indeed heaven, 24-7. I prefer a richer intellectual and social life.
Imagine such a person living in your own country (not the mongering, but living in the USA or Europe and not speaking the lingo), they would be (and are) showered with contempt and hatred. These Khmer you despise are far more tolerant and friendly. Perhaps it is an evolutionary defense mechanism. If mongers like Gaudente could speak Khmer, then the Khmer would soon learn what they're about, and would become far less tolerant and friendly thus endangering their fun. Pathetic.

Personally I love the fact i speak Thai and as soon as I move over to Cambodia will learn Khmer as well. I already have a start as many words are the same ( although at times different meanings).
I feel when u speak the local language, the locals open up to you and understanding is a important step in fitting, in. Only trouble with it is if u say u speak a little, that they think ur being modest and talk to you as if ur one of their own

Are you sure? Can't say I've ever heard a Thai say that.Phuket2006 wrote:Thai's have a saying, "Roo Mahk, Mai Dee"

Do you mean รู้มากยากนาน? (roo mak yahk naan - ignorance is bliss) - That's a well known saying.
รู้มาก (roo mak) usually means know-it-all or smartass.. (someone who thinks they know it all, but doesn't) It's rarely meant as a compliment. You can say 'roo mak, mai dee' I guess.. but it sounds a little strange to me. Not something an educated Thai would say I think - Sounds like bargirl talk. ฝรั่งรู้มาก (farang roo mak)
Here's an example of a Thai asking how he can tell off a smartass farang in English :
If someone said "roo mak, mai dee" to me I'd interpret it as "nobody likes a smartass". I'd also think they were using simplified Thai to make me understand what they meant.

in my early years that's where i learned to speak Thai, and its not only bar girls that speak poor thai as many of the thai's I know are NOT educated ( although i know a few deputy Mayors, big cops and business men as well).
So does it fit when i say to u,
รู้มาก (roo mak) Never said it was meant as a compliment,

Not at all. I have no misconceptions about my own limited level of knowledge. I am also very aware of the fact that I have no education and that what little I know is self taught.
I am however a stickler for fact, documentation, and corroboration. Which is why I asked : Are you sure? From what I know of the Thai language, there is no such saying, and the words put together like that does not mean "to know to much is no good". But if I'm wrong, I'd like to know so that I can better my Thai.
You seem often to present your own opinion or your theories as absolute and indisputable fact and when confronted with questions or doubt, you either fail to reply or do not present any proof or examples that would corroborate your "facts", but simply brush it off.

hey, whatever u wish to believe is up to u. I don't speak fluent Thai nor do i read an write it.
what proof do u wish> want me to ask my landlord, my daughter, her teachers or my neighbors?? I have heard it numerous times while living here
But to tell ya the truth , i really don't give shit
Update
Asked my daughter what it meant and my neighbor
simple Thai, but what I said," to know to much is not good." Its not often used by , "educated thai's" and yes u will commonly hear it spoken by Bar girls as in "Farang roo mahk, mi dee" ( as in when ur in a bar and understand when two girls are talking together and think u don't understand) but then u comment to them and they will say it with a smile.
