This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

The human head weighs over 11 pounds and shaking it "no" over and over again is tiring. So how do most of you reply to the solicitations of motos and tuk tuks? Do you ignore them? Or do you shake your head? Or just say no?
I usually shake my head unless I'm being bombarded by them at a street corner, in which case I ignore them. But I feel sorry for them. Why are there so many? Is it because there are no other jobs for them?
But I also suspect many of them would mug you in a minute if it were late at night.
Personally I never ride on a motorbike, but will sometimes take a tuk tuk if I'm in a hurry.

Mostly I just blank them, but to the ones near my home I always say, 'Baa, jung!' [Yes, I want] and then get in my car parked next to them. I can't help but sarcastic with the ones who see me everyday, and see me get in and out of my car, yet all they can register is a whitey walking past.
Bonzeee - love it!!

If I tried to ignore them, they would just take that as a challenge and would redouble their efforts for some sort of acknowledgement and soon I'd have several of them barking at once like seals at an aquatic park, begging for a fishy treat.
Just the subtle flick of the downward-held wrist or a barely perceptible, sideways nod of "no" works as good as anything else for me. I noticed Cambodians close to me often used subtle gestures in their communications so I decided to give it a try. No magic bullet, I'm afraid, but it saves energy and doesn't present much of a challenge for them. I tried speaking Khmer to them, but that always seemed to make them want to engage me further, at which point I'd be lost, so, for me, it was the next closest thing to speaking their language.

I just sing "at tay akun" to them and smile.
If they are brave enough to go for a handshake (the kind where they try to slow u down to talk to u) I grab their hand and literally drag them down the road with a smile. They usually laugh at first, then once they realize that I'm taking them with me they say sorry and try to break free. All the while their moto friends are usually laughing their asses off at the predicament their friend is in for trying to slow down the barrang.
Great craic!

Nice mastery of craic! Now we know that it takes cambod exactly 5 days to introduce a new word into his vocabulary.

Depending on my mood I either smile and say no, shake my head slightly, ignore them or tell them to fuck off.

I do the same as LL.
Although, sometimes I say "Baat, I want moto - free?" and sit on the drivers seat and drive their moto down the road a few meters before getting off and sharing a laugh. That's usually when drunk btw.

yeah... it's about as annoying as people who use slang from countries not there own. it reminds me of when madonna talked with an english accent. your an american... stop saying "cheers". oh... and the dop thing. i once had a guy drop me off and after fumbling around for cash i tapped him on the shoulder. he looked straight at me... pointed his finger in the air, and said "moto?". i shit you not.
Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?

Think about it this way: 100% of them are going to try to charge you triple or quadruple what they would charge a Khmer. They are going to try to rip you off. If you do get a discount, you are still getting overcharged. I don't feel the need to acknowledge someone who is doing this in my face everywhere and everyday. I had a guy who used to clap at me everytime I came out of my apartment for months. Really fking annoying. Plus they make fun of you and call you all kinds of bad names as you walk by. Some are just good people, but they dont hang around the tourist areas much. There was an excellent article written on this very subject a few years ago about the matter. It's an old favorite of most board members. http://www.khmer440.com/k/2009/11/anato ... h-motodop/

I just shake my moto keys and say Atee.
As annoying as they are they are just trying to make a living.

Slight smile + slight shake of the head while walking away. It's not rocket science.

For me its just an shake of the keys and a small nod of the head, if there are several in a row saying the same thing and I'm not in a good mood they'll get a 'fuck off', but its wasted on them.
