Teaching in PP

Postby kurty_boi » Wed Apr 04, 2012 5:18 am

This has probably been posted a lot - but how easy is it for a native English speaker, from UK, with CELTA, to find a teaching job in PP?

What sort of pay could you expect?

Are there any 'no go' schools or recommended school to teach in?

and...

what area is a good place to live to be close to the schools? ... or are they dotted all over the place?

I'm moving to PP in July and I've read quite a lot of mixed reviews & experiences online about teaching in PP, but they all seem to be from a few years back - so I'm not over-relying on them as an accurate resource to go by!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hey buddy! There should be quite a few threads here that are less than a year old, all with good/current info. Good luck!

There is a lot on the forums - still mixed reviews :/

I'd also like to network with other English teachers there - where's their hangout? (and don't stay staffroom!) ;)

I'm always down for meeting up with randoms. What are ur quals besides the celta? Degree? Experience? (a celta is very helpful here, so don't think I'm busting ur balls about not having a degree/experience...)

Give us some more info? How soon will u be trying to land a job? How long do u plan on staying? U think u want to teach kids or adults? What do u think u'll want to do in ur spare time (in regards to where is a place to live)?

Thanks for the reply... I am a newbie to this field of work - I've worked in finance for over 6 years now - investment & financial advice - so the only quals I have are the ones from school / college and professional exams for work (no degree).

I know it's not the same but I've done some volunteer teaching and it's something I definitely want to do as a career - so I started off with a 20 hour practical TEFL certificate a couple of years ago - knew then that I needed more training before I get let loose - so I took CELTA - and here I am.

I arrive at the end of July, so ideally looking to start work in August sometime.
I plan on staying forever if it all works out (I like travelling, but only as a holiday, not travelling my life around - so I'm set on making Cambodia my new home)
To start with, until I find my feet, I think I'd like to start off with teaching teenagers(+) rather than 5 year olds ... but I won't rule it out.
Spare time - lesson planning probably! But I'm determined not to burn out - so anything social would be awesome (though not on a major binge on a school night - gone are those days! ... and I haven't even hit 30 yet!)

It sounds like you have never been to cambodia before, before you really get set on staying forever keep an open mind, not everyone likes it. Be prepared to move on if its not for you. I'm sure you won't have to its a great place, but spend sometime getting to know it. I first came to Cambo with a mate a few years ago, he left after 2 weeks never to return! I don't mean to be pessimistic only realistic it has a character of its own. You sound like you are as qualified as many teachers looking for work in PP so it should come. Just put yourself out there. Good luck.

I've been to Cambodia 3 times last year.

Once as a tourist - loved it - but knew I was still in the high season, so some might say I was seeing the country at its best. So I came back twice more at different times of the year to see if I still liked it, and to look at work opportunities, best city to work in, etc. and to see if I could adapt to the difference. I did.

Here I am!

I take onboard what you said though - I will put myself out there, look for work myself and visit schools to speak to the DoS.
