Do bargirls often reinvent themselves?

Postby gavinmac » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:03 am

So I was perusing Facebook the other day, and I ran across the profile of a Cambodian woman. I looked at her photo and did a bit of a double take.

I actually knew the girl from when she worked at Rose Bar about 4-5 years ago. I didn't know her well, and I don't know her level of slutiness, but you have to assume that any girl working at Rose Bar was "available" for extracurricular activities.

A year or so after meeting her at Rose Bar, I ran into her when she was working at Riverside Bistro under a different name. Seriously, her name tag had a different name from the name she used at Rose Bar. She looked at me and told me she recognized me. I politely told her that I remembered her from when she worked "over there," using my head to point in a northerly direction toward St. 104. She became quite embarrassed and made me promise not to say anything to anyone at Riverside about it.

What's interesting about her Facebook page is that she is now married and living in a Western country. Her husband looks like a normal guy in his early thirties and doesn't look like a total prowler.

So here's my question. Is it a common strategy for hostesses to spend a few years learning English, turning tricks, earning money, buying fancy phones, and then, when they are ready to get married, change to a respectable job where they still have access to foreign guys, and then pretend to be a decent girl in an attempt to land a better quality husband?

I happen to think this is an excellent strategy for these girls. I know that some girls just stay in the bars waiting for "Mr. Right," and some guys do marry girls straight out of the hostess bars. But let's face it, those guys are mostly losers. The girls have to know that too. The quality of guy who hangs out in hostess bars is, on average lower than the quality of male tourist passing through Riverside Bistro, Metro, etc. It doesn't make sense for a marriage-minded slutty girl to stay in the hostess bar and hope that a typical whoremongering customer will barfine her, then pay her for a week of sex, then make her his girlfriend, then marry her.

Much like Groucho Marx famously saying that he wouldn't want to belong any club that would have him as member, these girls really shouldn't aspire to marry the kind of dude who would marry a hooker, if they can avoid that fate.

So, was the Facebook girl the exception, or is it common for hostesses to transform themselves into ex-hostesses, assume new identities, and then try to land a decent guy without him ever knowing that she once worked in a notorious bar? Should I just assume that every reasonably attractive girl I meet working in a respectable bar or restaurant is actually an ex-hooker?

I certainly don't want to be the chump who marries a seemingly "normal" Sorya market shop attendant, when everyone attending the wedding except me knows that she spent four years servicing Nigerians at Flora Bar before taking the job at Sorya. That would be bad. Very bad.

Reminds me of something that happened to me a few months ago.. having ice cream with my current girl friend.. lo and behold, this girl at a mobile phone booth, was hiding herself under the counter as we walk by.. and as i look closer.. who was that.. ? a rather pretty young girl that i met while hanging at the walkabout back in the day.. i take it she's a free lancer or something..

Surely anyone is allowed to reinvent themselves, including many of the barang who come here. Why should bar girls be denied? Many have far more pressing reasons to do so than the vast majority of us.

Short answer yes. I moved here in 1997 and have known girs who started life in the brothels of Toul kork and 63 st and then migrated to clubs like the Manhatten. A couple of girls I know went on to work at Naga. A Vietnamese Chinese girl, ex Martini after buying her mother a coffee shop told me that now she had set the family up she was looking for a husband. She used to turn up at the manhatten in stunning outfits. Her strategy paid off and she married a guy from Singapore. Also I know a few girls that have switched from hostess to internet whoring, using one of the many internet dating sites. This happened previously in Thailand when Pattaya started to go down market the more savvy girls went on the net to do business.

I previously worked in a large restaurant/bar that also had a hostess bar attached to it. There were 2 types of staff, the 'good' girls, wearing white and the 'bad' girls wearing black. One day one of the 'bad' girls wanted to change to the 'good' girl job. A simple change of clothes and customers perceptions of her changed immediately.

I don't know Mr Gavinmac, He seems to have a good reputation on this forum. No doubt he just went to Rose's Bar to observe the local color. If he did take part in of any extra festivities these bars offer I see him no differently than a bar girl. This bar girl thing seems to be such a double standard. If a bar girl sleeps with 100+ customers and a man sleeps with 10 different ladies over the course of 3 years I see very little difference in my opinion. You sleep with all the men these ladies have ever slept with. Double jeopardy if you are a female.

I am happy for this girl and I hope see does well. I only know a few bar ladies and believe if they had a chance of changing their lives they would do so. I know that not every girl wants to change but many do. I think it would be much easier for me to marry a good Khmer lady that use to be a bar girl than to have my sister marry most of the foreigners that I have met in Cambodia.

Gavinmac said, "but you have to assume that any girl that works at Roses was "available" for extracurricular activities." The men who visit, do we assume for them as well?

Women in general are always reinventing themselves, they're aware of the male attention span. They get their hair done/buy new clothes.

Perhaps Gavinmac secretly wants to be a bargirl! Jokes aside, willie makes a good point. Why does Gavinmac visit Cambodia so often?

Let them turn the page, write a new chapter and applaud them (discreetly) for their efforts. No need to dwell on a past that for a lot of them was a shameful or painful existence. If they were proud of their occupations as they get older they can open their own establishments, if they want to walk away and start again they also have that right.

I always assumed it was for the Walkabout Joker Draw, and the bright lights of Naga World.

Well I only live 2 hours away. And the missus isn't into threesomes, which probably discredits your other theory...
