Beware of Filipino scammers in Phnom Penh

This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

Beware of Filipino scammers in Phnom Penh

Postby ken svay » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:48 am

The blackjack scam is back according to the papers this morning.
I was approached by a filipino woman on st 5 the other day.She complimented me on my stupid hat and then asked if I lived here ans if I could speak khmer.
She claimed to live here as well and then she walked on.
I saw her again in st 130 later in the day-SCAMMER.
What I dont understand about the article in the paper is the claim that the victims were taken to western union and then forced to hand over money.
How do you get money on the spot from western union?
And why on earth would you co operate?

The scam is described in this Phnom Penh Post article:

We still need someone from Khmer440 to go undercover on one of these scams. Walk around the Royal Palace with no money or ATMs cards on you, pretend to be a rube tourist, go along with the scam, and then report back. They probably won't kill you.

I'm not sure how they get spot cash.

part 2:

1. They believe that they have lost money in a 'fair' game, and feel moral compulsion
2. As it stated in the papers, the scumbuckets threaten them to get the cash

What is the flipper embassy doing? Surely they should check the guy's credentials/ criminal record (the flipper guy who angrily denied everything)?

Does the paper identify the scammers as Filipino? How politically incorrect.

political correctness is one skill (perhaps the only one) which Cambodians lack.

Thank God for that small mercy.

One approached me on a motorbike a couple of weeks ago near the post office. Strong Filipino accent, asked about my hat. I replied politely in Khmer and he sped off.

During my final week in phnom Penh one of these guys (I beleive) tried to have a go at me. I was walking along riverside with a backpack to the direction of the rental boats and he was sitting on a seat. He waved at me and gave me a giant "Hello! Nice to see you again" and beckoned me over. I had deffinetly never met the guy before and was about to continue on my way. Then, as seems to be apart of their ploy he complimented to shitty, wash worn t-shirt I was wearing and invited me to sit down for a chat. T'was then I remembered the previous thread. I smiled and told him that I didn't feel like playing cards that day. His face showed a mix of anger and disappointment.

At what point in that encounter did she try to scam you? If she is a scammer, she has a crap work ethic.

They're working the park opposite Wat Botum fairly regularly. Go down there in the late afternoon and you'll have better than a 50/50 chance of finding them on any given day.
