Hand-painted Countryside Sign - Reduced Price
Hand-painted Countryside Sign - Reduced Price
The Hitler Sign says, "Welder of Metal". It was advertising a small welding shop on Highway 5 between Phnom Penh and Battambang.
The Khmer owner said he had the sign painted to, "Teach the local children about history". He said many Khmers think it is a picture of Charlie Chaplin.
Supposedly the painter of the sign had a stroke shortly after painting it and is no longer able to work. There are 2 sides to the sign, a 'Happy Hitler' and a 'Sad Adolph' - not really sure which is which.
This sign is not being sold to promote fascism/neo-nazism etc. It's a cultural curiosity (on many levels) and it is clear that hand painted signs in Cambodia are rapidly disappearing as printing becomes cheaper.
(The lower left corner of the metal frame and the lower right corner of the sign are beat up from natural wear. Also, there are some small areas where the paint has peeled. The sign has been outside in the elements on Highway 5 for a few years. In the interest of keeping the sign as original as possible, I have not attempted to repair it in anyway).
Dimensions: 100cm x 100cm – 39.5 in. x 39.5 in.
$1200 - call 078-985-548 or PM if interested

Don't listen to them Roscoe, they're just trying to wind you up.
I own a private gallery in Siem Reap that specializes in Outsider Art and although I haven't got the money to buy these pieces I would very much like to display them until you find a buyer. PM me and perhaps we could arrange a meet.

Hitler was quite a dab hand at art, he painted quite a few watercolours.
They are quite valuable these days.

Nice original signs...I am not too sure about prices as they are determined by market demand.
Personally I like them but just a bit rich for me....

Bojangles has a lot of the signs.
I like the one in srok sa ang for the ferry with the flying pajero.
Are they still being painted nowadays?

This is an area of collecting that I am not too familiar with...
I have seen a large Khmer sign for sale in Paris ....with guns ..
I think it had to do with an amnesty for handing in weapons ...
I was not sure of the date but thought it was maybe 20/30 years old
asking price Euro 2000

An art dealer friend in Indonesia dealt in hand-painted signage and movie posters. He put them up in a gallery in Ubud where they sold at a surprising pace and for prices that seemed absurd to me. My cousin came to visit us in Cambodia and spent much of her time photographing hand painted signs, which she prominently featured in one of her gallery shows in Los Angeles.
Too bad these signs are being replaced by cheap printing and will become extinct in a few more years.

That's like, your opinion, man.
