them damn 100 riel notes...

This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

This is quite timely. I've had a large bag hanging near my front door where I drop these bloody notes which has now burst after four years. When I was at Jungle I'd give them to staff to give to the monks who'd show up almost daily, but now I too am at a loss. What do they go for on Ebay?

Every time I get 10 I just sandwich them between a couple of thousands and hand to a motodop, cafe proprietor or some such. If I have a dozen they get a wee tip. The secret is to get rid of them frequently and not allow them to build up.

Ahem......tell me about it. I have a drawer full.

Wasn't it once quite popular for a certain type of expat (the cuntish type) to throw a bagful from the balcony at the FCC for the pleasure of watching the great unwashed groveling around in the dust trying to scoop up as many of these worthless pieces of paper as they could.

I have a same sized bag to KIRs. I suppose we could put them all together and throw them off a tall building. Or donate them to something. Or have a pub crawl with pockets stuffed only of 100riel notes.

This guy is selling a 2 x 50R and 2 x 100R combo for $1.99. He's sold 28 of them on this listing, but it looks like he's doing quite well just overcharging people for small denomination currencies. His whole listings are devoted to it and he has over 11,000 sales. He's probably rieling in the dough.

I use 100R notes for people who give me bad service / are rude to me. I figure nobody likes them, and I need to get rid of them, so I might as well give them to the assholes.

But now I think I'm just going to start saving them...

I can never understand why the 100 riel notes are always in such good condition in Phnom Penh.

Is it because they are all issued in Phnom Penh and drift out to the provinces?

Or does everybody collect them in plastic bags hung on the back of their door just in case the USD crashes?

Even beggars take exception to 100r notes.

Last week a customer wanted to tip my waitress - but she would not accept 20 100r notes. She even tried to get him to change them from my cash box - I refused. Eventually he gave up and went home and the waitress earned a talking to because she was mouthing off in Khmer to him as he was leaving and for a few minutes after.

Silly shit.
