If your friend is at a lower level, they will have a Khmer teacher. While they do make mistakes, you have to commend ACE for giving them the chance to better themselves and improve in an environment where opportunities for professional development do exist. Think of it as ACE giving something back to Cambodia.

Anyway, I think somebody earlier in the thread has said that this issue has already been dealt with by management.

ACE is the best language school in Cambodia.
They have built this reputation on the following principles:

1. Don't promote students who fail to the next level
2. Employ competent teachers
3. Accept that long-term gains are better than short-term profits

It has multiple long-term benefits that any idiot (but not many local people) understand.

It might not remain the best for long. I've heard through the grapevine that Cambridge ESOL exams might be coming back to town. It won't be just yet, but plans seem to be in the pipeline.

Yeh I can confirm that; I'm one of the examiners. Won't usurp ACE, though.

Interesting piece here:

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.php/ ... ffice.html

"UK ambassador to Cambodia Mark Gooding said British companies would look at education, construction and financial-services investments in the future."

A few years back, there were rumours floating about Phnom Penh that the British Council had been eyeing up possible office locations, and if they do come to town ACE would really have their work cut out. It could be good news for Cambodia though.

Possibly, but the IELTS is jointly managed by The British Council, IDP Education Pty Ltd (who own ACE), and University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. As business partners, they may not compete with other, and could possibly end up working cooperatively. Or perhaps this is why the British Council has never set up shop here.

There are other reasons why the BC has not set up shop here. In Vietnam, both the BC and IDP operate, without stepping on each other's toes - as they probably do in many countries. The IELTS link is part of it, but the most obvious reason is that many Viets have relations in Australia, while more and more are able to afford to go to the UK for their studies. Hence, both have a place there.

Recent changes in UK law for student visas makes it more unlikely Cambodians or Vietnamese will got to the UK to study as private students.

I would like to know who has applied to be examiners.

***Edited out. I went too far on that one and now regret it. Sorry for any offence caused. Too late, I know, and the damage is done, but I do regret it.

Now I'm confused. Is this supposedly King Lear's account?

I was guessing - could well be wrong. If not, where is King Lear these days?

KL&f - I didn't apply to be an examiner; I was approached and asked to take the role.

You know, I really wasn't bothered by the lies and smears coming from vlad, but this troll uses as his avatar my favourite bleedin' book - THAT'S what hurts

Yeh, when he attacked NedK yesterday, it occurred to me that he writes like a sock-puppet of vlad. But I dunno.

Can't deny being a troll as I don't know what one is, apart from the story of the Billy Goats Gruff!

Yes, I hated the #1 hashtag after the Lear bit. As I still love the play (well suited as it's about a grumpy old git who couldn't get a grip on reality until it was too late) I chucked it and shortened it. The fool is the real hero in the play, so had to keep him!

Sorry about letting frustration build up (bit of game pie got stuck next to some vitriol in the gullet) and then getting a tad sloshed so it all wooshed out the way it did.

Keep truckin', guys! :?

***Quick addition: I didn't 'attack' Ned, it was just a throw away comment about the length of his posts - he seems to realise now that it was just a meaningless attempt at cheap humour. (I love Geoff Boycott!!!)
