Here is the place to post any simple or complex questions you may have about any aspect of life in Cambodia and beyond without fear of being told 'That question has been asked 100 times before.'

I asked elsewhere on a kind of off topic thread, and I know it's been asked before, but quarantine / customs regulations seem to change in Asia at the drop of a hat, so just wondering if anyone has done, or knows of anyone who has done so recently. Any dramas? Any specific people / departments there to contact in advance? - I know for example Thailand and Indonesia require you to apply for an import permit before you arrive. I'm assuming from hunting around online that Cambodia doesn't do likewise, however.
He's microchipped and up to date on all his vaccinations.
I did email the Cambodian embassy and they replied a couple of weeks later saying they'd let me know when they find out the answer and unsurprisingly never heard anything from them since.
Me and the missus would likely be there for a few years, so in all probability he'll "expire" before we ever have to worry about exporting him again.
(P.S he's survived China and Korea so I have heard all the dog eating gags about a million times before - unless it's more interesting or insightful no need to waste your time / bandwith limit.)
Thanks.

There have been a couple of threads on this in the last 6 months or so. I not seen a definitive answer.
I do know of several people who have bought dogs in to the country, so I don't think it is a major problem. I was considering bringing my dog from NZ at one stage, but I doubt she would ever be allowed to go back, so she lives with my Mum instead.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Bringing a dog is not a problem. It's getting it back to the west that's difficult.

Watch your dog. Lots of cockroach scumbags here see them as delicacies, my one was stolen/probably murdered/served up in Chom Chao.

It's not the dogs fault, it's the scumbag owners who don't train them/ don't care and who have never lived in a city before. Rather serve the owners up at a Viet restaurant, 'Khmer food', LOL

In Chom Chao they carry on 24/7 running free. The gang comes out in the evening and sleep during the day (they take turns in barking at motos). Anyone in need of some dogs, come get them... please also get the owners as they will only replace them...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess from a legal standpoint the general consensus seems to be no one there gives a shit.

It is no problem to bring in a dog. You need a dog ''passport'' (i.e. medical book with history of vaccinations) and a passport photo of the dog. No photo = $ 1.00.

I doubt that many of the dogs here have ever been near a vet. The three pooches in my house certainly haven't, they are only kept to scare off burglars and kill rats and otherwise they barely get any attention.

If they are not vaccinated, then I should be afraid if they bite.

I've been researching *exporting* a dog from Cambodia, not *importing* one, but I'll tell you what I've learned; it may be similar.
To export the dog must have its "4 in one" vaccination (parvo, hep, distemper, and one I forget) and its rabies vacc. Probably best to be UTD for import. Needs an official record of the vaccinations (for export there's a book the vet gives you with the vacc tags in it and a description of the dog).
To export you DO need a permit, so it's possible (likely even) that you need a permit to import if you're flying in. I'd contact the Department of Animal Health and Production if I were you. This being Cambodia though, I wouldn't be hugely worried... usually if you show up without something like a permit they'll just tack on a $5 - $20 "fine" and let you fill one out on the spot or something, although you can never count on it. Still, contact the Dept of Animal H&P if you want to be sure.
Good luck with your import!

My brother brought a dog over in November 2010. All he needed was an official letter from an official vet (Dog was from the US, needed an APHIS form). Absolutely nothing was needed past that on the Khmer side of things. When he arrived at the airport, the officials he dealt with seemed extremely puzzled as they most likely rarely deal with that. They glanced at the papers and off we went. I would recommend Agrovet on St 360. $10 or $20 visits, medicine from France was cheaper than what he bought in the US, very competent vets who do care about your animal.

Personal internet peeve of mine is when people ask a question for which the answer might be useful to others and then never follow up with the outcome, so...I delayed coming to PP for another 6 months or so, re-signed at my current job for a few more months, so will test things out at the end of the year. Thanks again for the replies. They've been and hopefully will be very helpful.
