I live just around the corner from that den of the unwashed and I spoke to some Khmers I know who witnessed what happened.

They told me it was some 'playboy' rich kid who basically threw a tantrum in the joint - then came back with 5000 of his mates - just like a real man does - to finish the job. Pricks.

Anyway the place was up and running again last night, but looked like a few backpackers had checked out as only a few room lights were on.

Grouping together and giving an outsider a good beating (regardless of what happened) ... classic monkey behaviour ... what do you expect living in Cambodia?

But more seriously ... what hope is there for a country where the ruling elite behave in such a way? Especially against visiting foreigners who provide their income in terms of tourism and foreign aid. This was no street mugging by a desperate person ... this was a coordinated act of violence committed by animals.

I don't think any (or hardly any) of the muggings in Phnom Penh are done by "desperate persons" unless by 'desperate' you mean desperate for a new Scoopy and iPhone.
