Power Cuts

Postby Lucky Lucan » Mon May 28, 2012 4:57 pm

If any of you live in the south of the city you may have had a power cut today. The bad news is that there were a few explosions at a sub-station so don't be too surprised if it takes days to fix.

I had gone to Sihanoukville to have a look at the condos under construction there.
Shortly after my arrival in the evening, power was cut.
The day after, power was cut off at 10 in the morning and did not come back until 5 in the afternoon.
Needless to say, I saved myself the trip to the construction site.

A friend in KS reported today that power is out 16 hours a day (at least in his house) and that Sokha has been blacked out except for the casino. That's good for business. WTF.

Just spent 4 nights in Sihanoukville. I think it was Friday night, there were lots of outages and the staff at Beach Road Hotel kept bringing in their generator for backup supply. Trouble was there was a surge big enough to fry the TV and hot water service in our room. Also cooked my surge protector that I always used on my laptop. I spoke to the manager and he said they also had a ceiling fan cook and half of their exterior lights blew. He reckoned he only gets about 9 months out of a laptop there because of the power issues.

As another eminent academic poster said:

Make up your mind, you want the best of the west (electricity/no cannibalism) but you want to live in Cambodia?

I think the blackouts are part of the tourism drive.

50bn for military expenditure/hospitals/training but not one motherfucking investment advisor can open his mouth about energy. Good job, guys.

Had a young Yank through a few weeks ago, told me an expat in Phnom Penh told him Cambodia is going to be the next S. Korea or Singapore. The place to be investing now.

I laughed.

Although I would invest in a passionfruit orchard in Preah Vihear and get a few sheep to eat the grass.

Oh yeah, and solar power.

Don't know about the location but the rest of it sounds like Eden.

Snooky power supply continues to deteriorate and will until the new power station opens.
Even then though the price of power will go through the roof. The government has given the senator owner a very generous contract.
Power outages in perth for 160,000 people over the last few days thanks to three severe storms. The worst power problems ever but quickly fixed thanks to western efficiency.

Not been there for a while, but reports i'm hearing are that the power lines from the new Stung Hav power station are heading towards Thailand.

I would be really surprised if the power was being used to improve average Cambodian lives.

It actually only took a few hours. The electricity supply in the capital has improved a huge amount in the last 3 years.

Rumor is that a second generator supplying Snook blew and that the 16 hour cuts could last months. Sokha Hotel today empty, nobody even at reception, ready for a remake of The Shining.
