'SunSan' ( Henning Wessel) has passed away
After taking some time to understand the meaning of this post I have to say:
Henning - I'll miss you, In real life you were a staunch guy.
Luv'ed ya heaps. Kev.
I'm guessing his wife might be in a land of hurt at the moment,
If you guys in country can assist, please do so.
You have my respect and admiration - Kev

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Rest In Piece Henny.

Thanks for all the condolences. I think, if some of you could add one or two anecdotes, as KiR has done, I'll put this thread in a link when I email his sister; that way his family will have a portrait of Henning and how he was regarded by the community here.
I came, I argued, I'm out

I know he was very active and helpful on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree site - maybe someone who has an account can post something there, and any other tourism sites you know he posted on.penguint wrote:so sad, RIP, Henning. Dammit. Henning was a great guy. A real pleasure to know, a man who got on with anyone he met, regardless of their background. A bon vivant with a great love of food, drink and pleasant conversation. Very sad. Rest in Peace, my friend.

SunSan/Henning helped me retrieve and store some things that I had left behind in Cambodia. He didn't have to help, but he did simply because he could. He was good at helping people, like with taking the effort to find an effective means of delivering aid to rural villages that weren't being helped any other way during the major flooding.

A good man who will definitely be missed and will be remembered with affection by many. I owed him a drink and a meal... it will have to wait for another lifetime now. x

I remember when I had the idea of writing an article - 'The K440 Minimarket Challenge': the idea being that a bunch of us would descend on a well stocked minimart one Saturday afternoon and drink one each of every alcoholic drink they kept in their fridges and simultaneously, as a group, review each and every beer, lager and stout.
First name on the teamsheet was, of course, Henning and I recall that even as the event fell into total disarray as one by one we all got ridiculously drunk and slid under the table, Henning kept his head held high and took meticulous tasting notes. After drinking us under the table, he then scooped us all up off the floor, put us in his car and took us for a burger at the old Lone Star. What a trooper.

I have some details of his passing from his sister:
Please click on this tribute: http://vlktravel.com/Henning is going to be cremated in Amsterdam. My family and I shall take his ashes to Cambodia eventually and strew them on the Mekong, as he wanted. I was thinking of the 18th of March, his birthday and also the time when we were going to visit him again. To answer your questions: Henning did travel to Europe alone. He took a short flight from PP to Bangkok where he had to get a medical statement saying he was fit to fly. I found it among his belongings. I think by then he was in a wheel chair. He took a long haul direct flight with China Airlines to Amsterdam, which would have taken 11 or 12 hrs. He arrived at the gate in a wheel chair, barely recognisable. I took him to the medical centre of Schiphol immediately and they advised us not to drive him to Germany but to have him taken to the University Hospital immediately by ambulance which happened. The reason why I wanted him in Germany was insurance coverage foremost and ofc to have him close by. But it was impossible. Henning travelled to Germany purely to get medical treatment. I think I asked him to come home the first time one or two months ago. He and I chatted on a daily basis via msn.. until the time he didnt come online anymore which would be mid July and got me worried after a few days. He decided to come very quickly. On Thursday I got the information that he was arriving in Amsterdam on Saturday.
Henning's company is aware that he passed away: http://vlktravel.com/ , there is an announcement already. I think my cousins in Malaysia must have informed him. but I also rang him this morning.
I found your name on Henning's mobile phone, I guessed you were the Andy who posted on the forum Henning often used and sent me links from.

This is some very sad news. Henning was definitely one of the good guys and he will be missed.
I don't think this thread would be complete without a link to his touching piece, A Little Help in a Flooded Province.
