Price negotiation... opinions?
So we were discussing poverty in another thread and it got me thinking. If we live here and have (comparatively) higher salaries than most Khmer... why do we argue for the same prices the impoverished would get?
We can afford it, most times it's STILL cheaper than we'd get on our home turf, and it's giving some market stall owner, who may well BE one of the impoverished who are working their ass off just to get by, a little more in the kitty for that day. While we what? Drink one less beer?
My wife yells at me when I do the negotiations because I usually shoot for what I feel is a "fair" price, not what she knows she can drive them down to. I can afford the fair price, and while saving money is nice... I don't feel it's worth the effort to argue a market stall vendor out of 50 cents.
I know a lot of expats on here are proud of being shrews negotiators... so...
your opinions?

I think the fact that you are generous in giving money to random street stall owners is going to make it harder to explain to your wife why you are putting property in a corporate name to keep from sharing it with her.

Doing that will just encourage them to continue the practice and will piss you off in the long run. The way I would do it, is to bargain it down as low as you possible and stand your ground, after the transaction give them extra if you are generous. They will admire/respect you and at the same time help out the people after you this way.

Or they will wonder why you were fucking with them by bargaining them down just to give more.flying chicken wrote:The way I would do it, is to bargain it down as low as you possible and stand your ground, after the transaction give them extra if you are generous. lol I know what you are trying to say, I didnt mean to say give them couple of 100 riels (thats worse) after the completed transaction but 'keep the change' if its minimal or you can afford to.gavinmac wrote:Or they will wonder why you were fucking with them by bargaining them down just to give more.flying chicken wrote:The way I would do it, is to bargain it down as low as you possible and stand your ground, after the transaction give them extra if you are generous. considering the corporation would be 51% hers and 100% upon my death... how is that not sharing it with her again?gavinmac wrote:I think the fact that you are generous in giving money to random street stall owners is going to make it harder to explain to your wife why you are putting property in a corporate name to keep from sharing it with her.
the straw man scenario is only if you don't have a khmer of your own.
not that it's really any of yours, but we've already discussed it and she seem to think it's a totally fine idea if we don't end up with a condo. turns out she's not the paranoid greedy freak-out type you're clearly used to.
but if, knowing you were broke, an independently owned sandwich guy knocked some of the price off for you or gave you a free drink to go with it... should he then be obligated to do the same for your boss?104 wrote:i live in the UK my boss earns more money than me - funny though he pays the same price for a sandwich at lunchtime- will have to ask him tomorrow see if he wants to redress the balance

I think I saw at some London museums there was one regular price and then another price for students or the unemployed.

I think that's a perfect reasonable way to do it. A few days ago you were asking about putting it in the name of your company and just letting her live there. So I'm glad that we have convinced you to be decent about the whole thing. Not enough people take my unsolicited advice around here.OrangeDragon wrote: considering the corporation would be 51% hers and 100% upon my death... how is that not sharing it with her again??

b) i hadn't gone into the details of how the company would be structured, i only knew i would do it to protect me. if that meant having to do the strawman setup, i would have just willed her my 49%. i'm not a prick, i wouldn't leave her unprotected. however i don't want myself exposed either.
the condo looks like a nice situation where it can be in both names, presuming they're not shit property... though eventually we're going to look into a full size house and (after researching the company thing a bit more) 51 her, 49 me with 2/3 vote required for any action seems the best way for one of those. willing her nephew (who's living with us, and who i'm paying to send to good schools... so presumably wouldn't try to screw me later in life) the 51% in the case something happened to her.
i don't want: me/us/her to decide it's not working anymore (rare for khmer culture, but she'll be around a lot of my non khmer friends and it's not unheard of) to leave me homeless and penniless or her dieing (though i don't even like talking about the subject... guess some of the khmer superstition is rubbing off) to leave me homeless and penniless. nor do i want the reverse. a corporation seems the safest bet to insure us both.

That's probably not her nephew. She just doesn't want you to know she has a kid until after you're married.

i think one of the benefits living in third-world countries such as khmerland is to afford someone else doing the shopping and price-negotiaton for you, no?
the chosen land.

she's an only child. it's actually a 2nd cousin, but after some family drama in which her dad's a bit of an ass, her cousin and his wife helped to raise her. we're returning the favor.gavinmac wrote:That's probably not her nephew.
