Fuck Koh Pich.
Most importantly, it shows on that map where Quealy may be found. I really must get after them about the missing 's at the end of my bar name.

Well that is factually true. Most of the time, you can be found where they say you are.Jackal wrote:Most importantly, it shows on that map where Quealy may be found. I really must get after them about the missing 's at the end of my bar name.

It's not just them though KiR.keeping_it_riel wrote:Yup, I skimmed through a copy today and they had less original content over a month than we put on the front page every week. And Jeez, the quality of their writing sucked. I just don't know how they get away with such woeful writing.Playboy wrote:They were fun, but that were a while ago and time has moved on.keeping_it_riel wrote:The only thing in that rag ever worth reading was the Danny Whitehead page, which lasted for a year or so way back in first half of the noughties.
I skimmed through several expat oreintated publications at lunch the other day - 7-Days, Asia Life, this new thing called WUPP, The Advisor, the French one.
Seriously, not to blow 440s horn too much, but the front page articles are so far out in front, in terms of writing and original interesting content. Like ludicrously so.
The Advisor was the worst. I think the writer had basically done a 'best of' of the forum threads for the year, taken the best comments and pasted them in as 'original content'. Really poor.

Asialife is drivel for NGIdiots with their heads up their asses. Totally irrelevant and ignorant of what's happening in this country.
Wupp soso. I've seen 2 issues let's give it a shot but it mainly looks like an advertisement vehicle.
7 days-does that even get edited? (yes, I'm talking to you Poppy McPherson). Pictures about something going on. The pic is interesting, unfortunately the reader has no chance of finding out what's happening seeing as there is no caption. Incredibly shoddy print quality (If I were advertising I'd ask my money back). Loads of examples of poor editing. The killer was 2 weeks ago: they had an article about Khmer returnees. One profile started with the revelation: "I was born in Cambodia at the age of seven." I wonder why that never made the frontpage. You can still find it on the PPP website. In-cre-di-ble.
Advisor at least has a few good writers with reasonably interesting angles that write stuff that is not done 200 times already. They seem very supportive of the local 'scene'. Much more up to date. Mind you, that recent popularity poll reminded me of what the drinking and dining guide did a few years back: totally rigged.
And yeah, the pearnik.... once interesting, with biting comment, or lovely surreal humour. Then started a phase where every issue had to have some dirtbiking story (fascinating! Please tell me more...). Now... even the girls pics in adverts are a lot less and tamer than before. Still, it works well on the bottom of our guinea pigs' cage..
Used to love The Globe. Now that I can't read it for free anymore I don't see it that often...

Actually, upon reflection I think that is a pretty good assessment SP. The thing that really got my goat was the 'best of' that ran in The Advisor - the places plugged were either in on it, or were shamelessly the writers' preferred watering holes. Plugging the sponsors isnt so bad I suppose, but the non-business related 'best ofs' were lifted straight from forum banter.Sok Poupe wrote:Bizarre, I have the exact opposite opinion.Petrol Head wrote:I skimmed through several expat oreintated publications at lunch the other day - 7-Days, Asia Life, this new thing called WUPP, The Advisor, the French one.

I dont know if you have read this new Khmer 'lifestyle' publication which is targeted at tourists and expates; it is printed on really nice expensive glossy paper, and has attracted a huge amount of upscale corporate sponsorship.
However, it chock full of the absolute worst editing I have ever seen - wall-to-wall Khmer facebook Engrish.

I have to say that, in fairness, today's 7Days was excellent. A two page spread about the HIV village where some evictees from Borei Keila ended up, an article on juveniles in adult prisons, one about the French comedian who's on the TV, and one about Bérénice Lim Marlohe, the Cambodian/French actress from the new Bond movie. Good stuff.Sok Poupe wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
7 days is apparently about the only thing which makes money in Mr. Dunkley's Cambodian publishing empire

Haven't read all of it, but a quick look shows that most of my comments don't apply to the recent issue. In which case: well done, Poppy McPherson (is that really a name?).
Now, PPP, can we have a decent English speaker edit 'lift'? This weekly special is aimed at Kh students, and uses the broken English the average Khmer speaks. I understand and encourage that you'd want Khmer students to contribute to your newspaper (also, it's cheap!), but IMO an English language newspaper has a duty to educate, or at least give a good example of English language usage.
Now it confirms to the Khmer readership that the lazy and incorrect way they speak and write English, is acceptable. You're not doing your readers a favour here.

LIFT- Impacting on Khmer culture since 2009.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Did a name search and found this old thread. Seems former occasional K440 contributor Stan Kahn is in hospital with pneumonia. His slurred speech was eventually diagnosed...as "not having his dentures". Lordy. So I guess this is the answer to "what happens to naughty old school Cambodia sexpats?"... and the slow fade out to oblivion is not too pretty. If you happen upon his dentures, please drop them by Calmet.keeping_it_riel wrote:....or how about about the ongoing sexual escapades of frisky old Stan Kahn - the septuagenarian who obsesses over teenage flange.
I vaguely remember a bit about his writing, but couldn't be arsed researching further. I assume Stan contributed before KiR took over the reins here.
From the Kampot Noticeboard page on Facebook:
Up date about our old friend Stan Kahn.
As I am in PP I passed by to Calmet Hospital where I found Stan in ICU in company of his good friend Chen.
He is looking in relative better conditions than on arrival. He suffered from pneumonia on arrival, but his respiratory is better today.
The main problem is that his speech is terrible and very difficult to understand. As he had weakness in leg, and speech deficiency, doctor were thinking he did an Cerebral Vasculair Accident. So he was moved to neurology departm. But the CT Scan came out normal !!!
Finally , we sorted out that his impaired speech is due to the lost of his dental denture, which may be in Kampot. This make him difficult to eat. He complains of pain in leg, especially knees, probably from his fall at home.
The biggest problem is that he has no relative or friend with him. All Khmer patients are cared by their family.
Hospital treat the medical, but for the social, there is a problem, as patient family normally care for this. Hospital staffs are very concerned with this problem. They asked if US Embassy could help?
I suggest that Stan close friends go to Kampot to make rotation to assist him in eating, toilet, buy thing, food, drink, translating what he try to say, etc,... Up to now Chen has paid everything already a couple of hundred $ for the first day.
It is not sure how long Stan will stay in hospital. If X Ray shows tomorrow that his bones are ok, it will be good news.
A big problem was that it was very difficult to get any info, as It is very difficult to understand what he said. Hospital staffs asked a lot of question we could not answer.
I stayed 2 hours in Calmet. Stan was happy. Chen and I helped to move him from ICU to neuro building. It is not sure in which department he may be tomorrow.
For sure Stan will be happy to have some visits. Bring his denture if it can be found in his house.
G9 Stan we are all thinking about you.

I remember tripping one afternoon at Broken Bricks when I read about a dozen old copies of Bayon Pearnik. Seemed fascinating at the time...
