As you know, everyone except a few thousands foreigners have 5 years driver license. All drivers near 65 years old who wishes to renew their license must pass a health test (mostly eyes test) just like in some other countries. If your eyes are good enough, you still get a shorter permit, 3 years only instead of 5 years if I remember well.
To renew a 1 year license: 4 photos, passport and 33$
If its your first Cambodian license, same thing same price but a lot of extra paperwork like proof of current address.
For an extra 20$, no paperwork. Just your homeland license, passport, 33$+20$ and 4 photos (or maybe more for the first time).

My wife did the same thing at a legit driving school in SHV in 2008.andyinasia wrote:djaid48 wrote:Has anyone on 440 done the driving test for 5 year license?
If so, what was the procedure and can the test be taken in English?
My wife took her test yesterday - the written test is now pretty tough (for a Cambodian), and can only be done in Khmer. The written test takes an hour or so, then you have to wait about 10-14 days for the driving test. She did hers through a legit driving school (ABC).
.
She didn't like the manual car of the instructor so she bought and Automatic one to use for the lessons.
The written test cost $10 to have completed for her and the practical test cost $20 to have done for her. Result a 5 year licence.
I then taught her how to drive correctly. Mind you not much traffic in SHV in those days and she would not drive to PP.
It was a different matter in Australia, she managed to pass the written test, and it took her 4 goes to pass the practical test, which cost me well over $1k in lessons and test fees.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
Nope, as YOU think.....OSS 117 wrote:As you know, everyone except a few thousands foreigners have 5 years driver license. ...
Some people also have licences that don't expire for another 20-something years.
I've seen them with my own eyes.

I don't know about vintage indochina lifetime driver license, but now you can only get 5 years, or less if you are incredible old, like 65 or more.

My father's U.S. Driver's license expires in 2037, it's true, it is possible.
Yeah, they're not very vintage. They're not available now, but we only missed them by a few years.... (I don't even know if Barangs can get them. The closest I've seen to a Barang with one was Khmer-American who lives here on a gratis visa.

Well, this thread has gone massively off topic... but anyway.
For anyone currently curious:
I went to the well known motorcycle shop in town to ask, before bothering to get a letter from sangkat / etc. They asked for my home countries drivers license, passport, and passport photo. $106 or around there, including duplicating my passport photo to 4. This is for both "big bike" and car. I've already picked up the temporary licenses, though they mean nothing to me. They said I can pick up the 1 year license in 30 days or so.
No letter from Sangkat required, no lease, etc. They didn't even ask where I live. I guess licenses here don't even have an address? They did check the license class, though I'm not sure if they were looking to see if I had a car or motorcycle license in Canada. I have both, so it was no problem.
I will update this when I get the real deal.

they ask the hard questions, like "how many times should you honk before overtaking a car that is already overtaking a car?"andyinasia wrote: the written test is now pretty tough (for a Cambodian)

Forgot to update this until now... I received my real license cards about 3 weeks ago.
To get my license for both car and big bike, I simply had to go into the motorcycle shop with $106, 1 passport photo (they made copies for cheap), and my native countries drivers license showing validity for both car and motorcycle. I got a temp license from them a few days later, and picked up the real cards after 1 month.
This is quite current, since I went into the motorcycle shop first about mid July.
Cheers.

What class is that for big bikes and cars? (That covers little scooters too, right?)holidayinkh wrote:Forgot to update this until now... I received my real license cards about 3 weeks ago.

Can you scan or take a picture of the back and post it here, as I don't think it has any personal info on the back.
And tell us what class it says on the front too?
Thanks!

My better half has a license that I looked at the other day. On the back it explains (with pictures lol) what each "class" eg. A, B, C. driver's license allows you to drive. It seemed like B which includes B1 and B2 allows motorscooters. I will update. I do believe there were separate classes for motorbikes and "big" bikes vs cars vs Big Trucks/rigs.cambod wrote:What class is that for big bikes and cars? Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
seems... steep. had my B licence renewed last month for $33, same as original price in 2011. Enquired about the A2/big moto licence price and they said it would be the same price.

Good question about little scooters... I had only assumed the A2 license would include them, but don't actually know that. Seems crazy if not. From reading around, it sounds like the "B" covers scooters also, but thats just from random websites.cambod wrote: What class is that for big bikes and cars? Maybe someone who actually knows can confirm some of this?
They gave me two cards, one is "B" and the other is "A2".

Could be. I didn't really shop around. I could also have the price I paid wrong too, I'm going from memory only and no longer have the receipt.epidemiks wrote:seems... steep. had my B licence renewed last month for $33, same as original price in 2011.
