Last year there was talk of an Australian Airline starting direct flights from Australia to Cambodia, after an un-named airline were negotiating about getting the landing rights etc. Seemed to think it would be Jetstar coming with short haul A320's from Darwin, but then they cancelled the Darwin to HCMC. So that ruled PP direct flight out.
Turns out it is QANTAS with chartered 747 flights from Sydney to PP. Doing VIP charters a few times over the next 2 years.
First flight arrives into PP on Sunday October 13th in the afternoon with alot of rich elderly on it.
QANTAS 747 Charters are now coming to PP
Charters also arriving in Sihanoukville now. Beijing to Sihanoukville every other day from Oct. 28th
It seems that there could be a lot of new flights soon. PAL have announced that they are planning flights between PP and Manila to commence soon, a very convenient challenge to Cebu's who currently fly SR to Manila, and with Jetstar close to opening a regional hub in HK and forming an alliance with one of the Chinese carriers, it's highly likely the HK - Cambodia route will open up. About time too; that Dragonair flight is ridiculously overpriced.
I can remember reading a while back , that 747's are to heavy and would never be able to land in Sihanoukville and only occasionally in PP. The tarmac is
like the skin floating on a rice pudding.

There is not not difference in weight from a 747 and a 777, (about 20 tons) and Qatar fly daily into PP with 777's and have 4 less wheels so the weight distribution is probably higher for the 777.
But of course they are not flying in or taking off at there MTOW into PP.

Landed at 15:30.
While waiting on my Tiger flight to go to Singa's i got some snaps. I will try and put 1 up.
There was a helicoptor which kept on circling it, a film crew standing on the tarmac, and about 200 airside workers/engineers standing around looking at the plane as we left at 15:45.

I had posted on a Thai board, sawatdee-gay-thailand.com and received info about this flight
The flight is for middle income retired tourists that visits a dozen locations. I was told that there will be more to follow.
here is the reply with details. http://www.sawatdee-gay-thailand.com/fo ... 5&p=282446
