On my way to the passport office a while ago I saw a black RR with white stickers under the handles. It made it look even more classyHanno wrote:So will the Rolls Royce sold in Cambodia come with big "Rolls Royce" stickers and the blue stickers under the handles?

What about the Bentley with the 'Penh Chet - We Care Your Car' sticker?

I read that in the weeks following PP fall, before falling out with them, the KR repaid the Vietnamese by allowing them to take both industrial machines and cars out of PP.Spigzy wrote:

That would explain the rarity of prewar cars in the country.
^^and why A2 Jeeps and Traction Avants are relatively common in Vietnam.

I have never heard about such cooperation that late on. I would have thought most cars just rusted to bits by the side of the roads. There were plenty of these wrecks left in 1979 and they were scrapped or scavenged afterwards. That was 37 years ago, so very few cars that were still roadworthy then would still be usable. Cambodians aren't big fans of old cars/stuff either.Barang_doa_slae wrote:I read that in the weeks following PP fall, before falling out with them, the KR repaid the Vietnamese by allowing them to take both industrial machines and cars out of PP.Spigzy wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I recall that, after the KR lost PP, Neil Davies wrote of looking for his prewar car, and finding it stacked in a scrap yard with all the other vehicles which had been junked by the KR.
So, I guess they were all destroyed for scrap during or after that time.
There's a really, really old Citroen farm pickup between national roads 1 and 3 to the south of the city. That things a running antique with a Toyota diesel. Must get a snap of it.

I think the Vietnamese army stole any cars they could in early incursions before the KR and anything still mobile post KR. But the KR did seem to junk most of them. I know of a black sixties Plymouth in a shed down the Bassac past Takamao and I have seen a Peugeot 403 wagon with Vietnamese plates. They used to do the taxi run between Saigon and Phnom Penh.
The Thai are the car fanatics of Asia, there is a website for Phuket based car sales and he lists some amazing cars from a black E type convertible to cars from the thirties. There is a Thai somewhere in a central city who has a multi story car park full of old Mercedes. And my old mate Prince Siri who had well over a hundred classic sports cars, he probably still has them.

A very expensive car to maintain but I loved my 928 (an 86).Spigzy wrote:I still have a 928 in the uk, definitely not a bad car, far from it. 5L V8, the thing will cruise for miles and in absolute comfort aside from the traditional hard Porsche suspension which is increasingly horrific due to the road conditions. That and any electrical gremlins, lift up the carpet and a 928 has more wires than a 747! Even took the new Cayenne for a test drive last weekend and that whilst comfortable still had the hard suspension when going through bumps, nothing like a Range Rover.
