Cynical NGO advertising from Sunrise Cambodia
I don't know why, but this NGO ad troubles me. Is it right to use images of kids like this, or are my residual politically correct sentiments from years ago resurfacing.
If you asked me to pinpoint my exact concerns I would struggle, but does the child on the left know her picture is being used to portray a (presumably underage) sex worker.
Does anyone know which NGO this comes from?

One of the major anti-trafficking NGOs used an image of my cute as a button niece in their virtual and hard copy propaganda. She was neither:
A) trafficked
B) 'at risk' - I've got the damn school fee receipts to prove it!
To this day I don't know where they jagged the photo from - probably a mate's Facebook. Definitely didn't get permission from the illiterate mother, or us the financial guardians.
Makes you think - when you trade on looks for dollars, who's trafficking who?

Reputable organisations including charities use professional models for their advertisements. The models should have signed model release forms giving permission to use the images in various forms of media.
I think a lot of organisations these days don't bother to get permission, they just take stuff off the Internet to use.

Sunrise are saying they paid 'talent' for these shoots. When asked which agency there were from, they said they didn't waste money on real model agencies but used stock photos, in-house resources and friends and family (whatever that means).
Given Sunrise made $1.283 m profit in 2015 and have accumulated profits on the balance sheet of over $7.1 m, perhaps they will use real models next year.

I think we need to get our friend Steve Morrish over at SISHA on the case.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
Perhaps they'll stop using misleading poverty porn too.scobienz wrote:Sunrise are saying they paid 'talent' for these shoots. Not being funny, but Srey Mai looks like she needs to go back to Kindergarten and not be stuck in the kitchen washing dishes.
It does raise the obvious question. If they are so cash rich (they have over $3m cash in the bank) why are they trying to raise yet more money instead of spending it?
There's a note on the page:
"Names are changed and stories tweaked to protect the privacy of the people we support. The people photographed for this brochure were paid for their time and talent. Funds raised are applied to the Sunrise education budget."
That's still awful poverty porn.
