That's fucking creepy.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
when i was growing up, we use to have a no girls to go camping policy. because of shit like this. but when dudes started getting married, we bring them along. bringing a high maintenance chick camping is like the worst experience ever. and this guy brings back those memories.

I have an answer to your problem, a new girlfriend , all her family are dead so no chance of them turning up demanding things. However she will expect you to leave your wallet lying around and take large amounts from it a will. PM me for her details.

Good luck NewKid!
You seem like a nice guy (naive, but nice) so I won't roast you. But why are you letting some uneducated, third-world bumpkins dictate how you spend your hard earned money? If you were back in the states, would you make the same choices? Bow to the same familial pressure?
I hope it all works out and everyone lives happily forever and ever!
Please keep us posted.

Are you paying for all those?newkidontheblock wrote:My plan to survive the ceremony was to build a small room near the site, have it equipped with aircon - to survive the heat and humidity, western toilet - to avoid the traditional outhouse, and a shower - to wash off the never ending sweat, dust, and mud. Wrong. The in-laws seem to have bigger ideas. Ceremony will be at the in-laws as per custom. Initial plan was build underneath the existing Khmer house. So the house was raised an extra 3 meters, with plans to pour a new concrete foundation. New plan is to build the room next to the existing structure, build walls on the bottom floor - in essence a second house, with the room being accessible from the new house and acting as a back wall.
Also the small room has morphed into a giant room, about half the size of the house original house, with the above plus kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and yet undreamed of other things.
Hope there won't be any further surprises.

A new building like this equipment with lav and aircon probably costing about 6k (raised to 10k as NKOTB will have no idea about prices). Plus electricity connection (upgraded to run an aircon) plus furnishing...
For a 3 day stay...
3k a day. This is a special kind of stupid.
The family must be rubbing their hands with glee.

Hey his future wife is Mother Teresa reincarnate. Surely she wouldn't let him be thus exploited.Khmerhamster wrote:A new building like this equipment with lav and aircon probably costing about 6k (raised to 10k as NKOTB will have no idea about prices). So pity all dear frigavinmac wrote:I forget about those. Om March 21, 2014, he posted this:

No confusion, no heartache. No hang ups to deal with, no being strung along, no lies or deceit. No getting screwed over. Plus, if there are issues, it's a simple matter of buying a slice of time from a different girl.

Ohhh Its all about saving face for the poor family of course... That's one my my favourite excuses when foreigners do silly stuff like this. "Oh but I had to buy a bunch of land or build them all a new house in the village to save face for them..you know how it is in Asia right" Right... I will say it is astounding how much some of these these bumpkin family's can get out of some of these naive foreign souls.chkwoot wrote:Good luck NewKid!

Hopefully things go ok for you NKOTB but seriously there must be alarm bells ringing if you came to post on here that your inlaws decided to build a whole new house for themselves with your money that you had not planned. Building yourself a little safe sissy boy shelter for a few days in the countryside is ridiculous enough...newkidontheblock wrote:....

Id suggest you get yourself a good helmet for the ride you may be taken on.
Let me tell you a little story about a friend of mine....
His wife was quite fat and pregnant, so it was decided to stay with the family for a while. The man was going mental from all the early screeching, toing and froing of an average n household and threatened to move out.
A man was called, soon many more men arrived with trucks and tools and a smallish 2 roomed 9x10 house began to appear. The bedroom was nice, big enough for a double bed, large wardrobe and some floor space, with an ensuite for private sit down shittery (unlike the communal squatter outside). The tiles were layed and the windows installed when my friend noticed a small issue, the house had been built direct onto the end of the original house with the old back door only accessible through one of the 3 new back doors (in the new house's living room). Ah well thought the friend they can have the access through one of the doors, as they will surely build a wall to divide the 2 dwellings, even though they are connected.
'when are they building the wall?' the hapless chap asks his beloved.
'what wall?' she eloquently replied.
'the wall to, you know, make our living room not part of your sister's house'
'oh, no wall'
'plasterboard?'
'no'
'just a thick curtain then?'
'oh no'
Now the 'living room' is the parking place for 1/2 dozen motos and all the old furniture nobody uses but can't bring themselves to throw out. Basically scammed for an extension with an ensuite barang quarters.
I'm, I mean my friend, is paying back a bank loan to the tune of $200 a month (for an unknown duration) for the privilege.

Spent a week last year at the wife's hometown, almost drove me nut. People usually go to bed at 7:30 and wake up at 5. There is absolutely nothing to do during the day other than drinking cheap liquor with the local men, playing card games with the house wives or go watch cock fighting.
Anyway, good luck NKITB. Looking forward to your next saga
