Haggling at Central Market
Haggling at Central Market
I'm not sure how good my haggling skills are. Bought a couple pairs of shorts today. Got them down from about 12 bucks each to 9 bucks each but the sellers had a big fuck off smile on their face as I was leaving. For me a 9 dollar pair of shorts is a great deal compared to what I would pay for them back home. Could I have got the price down by more here?

Bullshit. I got myself some great deals on shirts and other stuff at Central market plenty of times. I guess you'd left your haggling skills in shitsville that day.
Nb shorts at $9 doesn't sound bad.

If you didn't walk away at least 20m you're not doing it right, you could have got them down to $8 for sure.

Not sure many on here are getting $5 a day.Metal1982 wrote:figure wages are about $5 a day. would you pay a full two days wages for shorts in your home country? thats how i figure it.
Why should you base your clothing choices on what other people might earn.
Surely best to look at your own income???
My wife keeps buying me Under Armour brand shorts from the Russian Market. 6 or so pairs so far (plus 1 pair of And1 brand shorts) $4 a pair, maybe once or twice $5.
Add those to a huge collection of Under Armour t-shirts ($4-5 each) and I look like I'm sponsored by them.
Under Armour have got a massive leakage of clothes from their Cambodian factories.

Every dollar an expat spends on clothes is a dollar that can't be spent on beer and hookers.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: Why should you base your clothing choices on what other people might earn.

I bought a pair of exercise shorts from Aeon last week. Only $20 but they look very cool and say "Brooklyn" on the side.

Most of that stuff is from Vietnam. Also, they're not leaks but either knockoffs (many also have a Nike logo but exact same material and colours) or factory rejects because of minor flaws. I got a pair in Vietnam before they started appearing here and flooded the market with them. Good shorts for exercising though.Rama wrote:My wife keeps buying me Under Armour brand shorts from the Russian Market. 6 or so pairs so far (plus 1 pair of And1 brand shorts) $4 a pair, maybe once or twice $5.

Anyways, I've never thought of Central market as cheaper or more expensive than other markets. They all specialize in certain things. I typically buy suitcases and bags from Central Market. They'll inflate the price if they know you're a tourist, but as soon as they realize you live here it drops to normal prices.

How many pairs of shorts do you need? Do you keep soiling yourself?Rama wrote:My wife keeps buying me Under Armour brand shorts from the Russian Market. 6 or so pairs so far (plus 1 pair of And1 brand shorts) $4 a pair, maybe once or twice $5.

Central Market, and even Psar Leu in Sihanoukville are not the cheapest places to go shopping for clothes and/or striking up deals, espesh for a Barang

By that logic a pair of shorts should cost what? 25-50cent?Metal1982 wrote:figure wages are about $5 a day. would you pay a full two days wages for shorts in your home country? thats how i figure it.
You can apply that on almost anything in Cambodia. What can you buy in Cambodia if it has to be cheap even for someone who make 5$/day?
Not clothes, not beer, no trips, no food, no nothing. Everything would cost insane amounts if you put the % of a daily wage in comparison with a western wage. Welcome to a 3rd world country were ppl are poor. Maybe you did not notice.
I thought Central was more costly and I assumed it would be from more tourists and higher cost of operating (rent higher?). I do know certain items are more costly in Russian Market compared to Psar dtom tkov. (Sp?)
Anyway, I am spoiled to have my missus haggling.
