Weird story: A young Canadian guy found hanged in his police cell in Bangkok this week was the alleged Admin of a notorious Dark Net market place:

Alexandre Cazes was found hanged in his cell at NSB Headquarters in Bangkok a few hours before a scheduled deportation hearing.
Alexandre Cazes was arrested on July 5th in Bangkok, Thailand in relation to a joint RCMP and FBI investigation with raids in the Trois-Rivieres and Montreal areas of Quebec. Those raids were searching for computers related to Alphabay, possibly servers. It is unknown if any arrests were made during these raids in Quebec.
Cazes was arrested at the same time the raids were being conducted. At the time of his arrest, authorities also seized four Lamborghini cars, and three houses, valued at $12 million USD. Authorities continue to search for additional assets.
Cazes was suspected to be an Administrator and one of the owners of the largest darknet marketplace in the world, Alphabay. Alphabay boasts a criminal membership of over 240,000 people and sold everything from illegal drugs to stolen credit card and counterfeit currency. It has been reported recently that drugs purchased from Alphabay resulted in the deaths of numerous individuals in the United States.
Had Alexandre Cazes lived and been convicted he would have faced life in prison.
The Darknet site, Alphabay disappeared on July 5th, following the RCMP and FBI raids and the arrest of Alexandre Cazes. This prompted many members to suspect the owners of the site had started an “Exit Scam”. An “Exit Scam” is where the owners of a darknet marketplace shut the market down and abscond with all the members money.
In truth, that may still be the case. Following the disappearance of the site, members were able to track their bitcoin wallets being emptied into several other accounts. The way in which the wallets were emptied was in a manner more common to an Exit Scam than a Law Enforcement seizure, so members currently think the other Alphabay owner, Alpha02, may be emptying the accounts and running with the assets. Those Bitcoin Wallets continue to be emptied today.
There has been no word on the other owner of the site, Alpha02. Several months ago, Alpha02 was a victim of “doxing” (having his real identity revealed) and paid $100,000 USD to keep the supposed name secret. Once Alpha02 paid the blackmail money, the blackmailer leaked the supposed information anyway and fingered none other than Michael Calce, AKA Mafiaboy, as the other owner of Alphabay. Calce is one of the most famous criminal hackers in the world, now reformed and working as a successful security expert. Calce was recently hired by HP to work with security. It has not been confirmed and this writer is not saying that Alpha02 is Michael Calce, or that Calce is involved in any illegal activities. I am only stating that the blackmailer released Michael Calces name after Alpha02 paid $100,000 in extortion money.

What is weird about the story? Running a successful marketplace can indeed make you very rich. The prospect of losing it all and spending the rest of your life in a US jail could push somebody over the edge I imagine. With this amount of money there is of course the risk somebody else is responsible for it but good luck getting proof of that....
"It has been reported recently that drugs purchased from Alphabay resulted in the deaths of numerous individuals in the United States."
Why is it relevant to mention this? It is a marketplace, all they do is bring users and dealers together. The latter is responsible for selling crap.
If it bothers the author that drugs might kill you there is a very easy solution.... don't use them.
"This prompted many members to suspect the owners of the site had started an Exit Scam".
It seems only like common sense to me that once authorities take down your market but fail to seize BTC wallets, remaining admins will clear them out. Anyway even if the authorities seized the coins all end-users still would be fucked as they won't get them back anyway.
Let's see how many other people get burned if LE is able to access any data on the server(s). Better have good OPSEC in place.
Mafiaboy could expect some men in black to pay him a visit

News has emerged that besides Alphabay, Hansa market also went down. The bad thing for their users is that the police took over and 0wned the site for nearly a month. Switching off crypto enabled them to eavesdrop on user messages. Some arrests have been made but I imagine this goes up once they start processing all the captured data.
