Hi there,
Just bought a new Suzuki Smash. When discussing the included 1-year service with the mechanics, I think they said first oil change 3,000km then every 1,000km. However I may have mis-heard and as my Khmer/their English didn't match up very well I just wanted to ask if anyone has an idea?
Thanks!
Oil change new Suzuki Smash
From new it should be oil and filter at 300km. Then oil every 1000km with the filter changed every 3000k thereafter, along with oil of course.
Although I would be inclined to chainge the oil and filter after 30km then follow the schedule above, which is what I did with my new Viva.
Also, don't over rev the engine for the first 500km and let it warm up before even if you rev it whilst staitionary.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
I would not wait 3000 kms for the first oil change.
I would say do the first one at 1000 then every 3000 after that.
Can vary depending on how and where you ride.

On my new Honda 110 (6000+ km now) bought last year, I changed the oil after 50-100km or so, then again at 500km. Definitely don't wait 3000km, even if it's not a high performance engine. Bits of metal from the rings will break off during the first few hours (some say 30mins) of break in. You want to flush those out. Oil changes are dirt cheap on these, so don't skimp out. I change my oil every 700-1000km or so now, sooner if I've done longer highway trips at just under full throttle to say, Kampot or Sihanoukville.
BTW, you've just made the best purchase you'll ever make as new expat here, congratulations.

Did anyone read my post. You don't change the oil after the first 3000km, that's when the filter should be done! (3000, 6000, 9000km etc)
Bit alarmist saying "bits of metal with break off the rings". If anything it'd be tiny pieces that you couldn't even see with the human eye and anyway that's what the filter is for.
There is no need to change it before the manufacturers recommended intervals from new , 300km or 500km and what i stated above, but if you want to be extra Akiralike you could (if you want) change it at 30/50 or 70km.
But then you also could let it warm up first, which is far better for the longevity of the internals (engine and gearbox) than overzealously changing the oil. And you should not over rev it for the first 500 km but that's up to you!
Agree with Lexus that the Suzuki is far superior to the overpriced Hondas.

We all read your post, which was valid. The OP mentioned the oil change at 3000. I simply reiterated what you said.
As for tiny pieces of metal, yes it's a bit alarmist but I'm simply explaining what happens when you break in a new piston. These aren't performance machines. They're super low compression and I suspect I could run mine on vegetable oil for quite a while before it conked out. However, I still followed almost the same procedure on my $1200 scooter as I did on my $10 000+ machine because the basics are the same and I'm anal. Tiny shards of metal break off and flow around. Yes, the filter is there for that but I still change mine quickly after the initial break in as after that, the rings should have set to the cylinder and you won't get much more. It's $4, so why not?
Lastly, I didn't say Suzuki was better. I implied that buying a new scooter is the best purchase ever. Can't believe I waited so many years before pulling the trigger on mine. It's only the Honda Dream and Scoopy that are overpriced, the others are fine.

Anal yes but maybe sensible.
So we agree. That's a first!
If the op didn't change the oil and filter before the manufacturers interval then the extra wear would be minimal, is all I'm saying. But yes, I did/do the same as you.

Would you think the same if you already owned a car (honest question)?LexusSchmexus wrote:I implied that buying a new scooter is the best purchase ever. Unequivocally yes. I've driven a car a few times here and the only reason for me to ever buy a car would be if I had a child (for longer trips to the countryside). I personally wouldn't be able to handle the time (3x) it takes to get anywhere in a car here. Plus bikes are more fun. Driving a car simply requires a different mindset. However, the main thing for me saying it's a great purchase though is the fact that new bikes need virtually zero maintenance and are bulletproof for years to come. Used bikes and cars are always full of little problems because of the previous owners. It ends up costing a lot both financially and in terms of little headaches. So it's not really about bike vs car, but rather new vs old.
I wouldn't recommend it for you, of course, as I'm sure you have a driver so you can make calls and work on the laptop while heading to the next conference. Plus to be honest, it would be a bit unsightly for someone of your status to ride a motorbike (scooter especially).

Don't you have a Smash?
Then you'd know it has an oil filter, as do all small Moto Suzukis.
Even my Step had one!
It's those bloody Hondas that don't!
