Preah Vihear on a bicycle...
... possible or impossible? I know it's steep but recently I cycled the Thaket Loop in Laos which had a few steep climbs including two of 13% one of which is 5 K long. I am not ashamed to admit that I had to push and cycle that one.
Does anyone know the gradients of the climb up to the top?
Cheers

That's what I thought. I have cycled Northern Vietnam Lau Chai , Son La, etc, and crossed the border into Laos at Dien Bein Phu- apologies if spelling is incorrect, all fully loaded. If I were to cycle Bokor now without kit it would be a piece of piss!
Cheers

I was up there in Jan and it is doable by pushbike, only the last couple of 100m gets very steep, the rest is no problem if you have enough gears.
None but ourselves can free our mind.
I agree with Visser, I think it would be possible, just a couple of very steep sections at the end. You'll probably receive the usual grumbles from staff wanting you to take the 4x4 up there instead. I was up there in April.

If it gets too steep can't you just turn round and freewheel back down and go find beer?

I have a distant cousin selling Klang and Angkor at a mid way point, 3700 riel for a barang, 3900 riel iced cold. Her name is Srey Mom. If you mention the chicken, I think she will lower 100riel less.RobW wrote:If it gets too steep can't you just turn round and freewheel back down and go find beer?

For future reference for any other cyclists.
Is it possible to cycle up to the temple on Phnom Preah Vihear? Well, yes it is kind of. When they asked at the ticket booth how I was going up and I replied by bicycle they didn't looked too shocked and there was no attempt to force me to take a 4x4vpick up or a motocycle taxi. However, they did warn me that others had triec and failed while others had succeeded and that it was extremely steep with no refreshments untill the top. Mr Chicken talking bullshit once again about family selling drinks halfway up, nothing, no one other than army n copper posts.
Anyway once you start the climb proper, it's a hard , very hard 3k of 11 to 12% gradient, with hairpin bends and as hot as fuck with no shade. I stopped three times to rest and drink water. After 3k it becomes 13% which is my limit for cycle climbs for another k, very very hard and as usual my heart told me to walk n cycle rather than rest n cycle otherwise yer logs just go. At just over 4k the road does a sudden left turn and becomes the steepest road I have seen over 16% and impossible to cycle , for me anyway, I had to push on tiptoe for at least 500m, resting every 25m!
Can you cycle all the way, probably not , can you go up with a bicycle, for sure but it's fucking hard work.

Are you getting yourself into trouble again horace?
It's reported that a foreign cyclist is in trouble for trashing a local commune house in some godforsaken backwater - buggered if I can work out why.
It doesnt look like you, but you MAMILs have been known to change appearance quite rapidly.
