Tony (Shanghai,)
May I say the Shaghai is the premier bar in all Phnom Pehn. I was there back in the day. Long may it last. I remember the great girls of the era: Chilli and Dee. Long live Shanghai!

Are you sure the girls weren't called Charlie and Dean?

Sad news. He was a real character. He and I fell out for reasons I'm still not clear about, but I respected his direct approach to life and his sense of energy.

Rest in peace Tony.
Got to know Tony at the Fuzzy Navel some years back.
Sad to hear this.

That info came from a 2005 Cambodia Daily article. More than one Tony's Bar?chkwoot wrote:RIP.
Tony Byrne was never associated with Tony's Bar. That Tony moved to Sihanoukville to run Ezecom's business on the coast. Not sure what he's doing now since the purge.

That article doesn't seem to exist anymore. Did the CD fuck something else up? I knew both Tonys very well, and frequented Shanghai and Tony's Bar often. Two different guys.jm wrote:That info came from a 2005 Cambodia Daily article.chkwoot wrote:RIP.

May be confused with the other Mr.Tony's Bar on St. 108. That Tony was French. He was jailed for about 6 months for running a brothel upstairs. That bar closed permanently at the end of 2004.

I remember Tony's Bar on 130(?) near Psah Thmei. He was a northern English guy. The Tony who managed Shanghai was a different guy, seemed like a tougher sort of character.chkwoot wrote:That article doesn't seem to exist anymore. Did the CD fuck something else up? Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
