Reports of major change to visa laws imminent
Yup. I'm hearing all the usual agents have been informed of this change and they are accepting renewals up to 31 August but anything after that date will require WP.
I'd be interested to hear from DF how easy it is to get a work permit without a job. Sounds like bollocks to me.

Is having to leave the country every ninety days and then promptly return going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people?

I'd agree with that. Personally it doesn't bother me as I've been in compliance for a couple of years (and paid for the previous years), but as far as I know it isn't particularly easy for an individual to get one. There are a whole lot of people out there, for example, who work abroad or have independent means, but aren't anywhere near retirement age.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: The only unreasonable part of it is the vagueness of requirements (IMO).
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
About two years ago I was having lunch with a certain senior person whom I can't mention or I'd have to don my SAS gear and kill you all and he asked me about my visa.
I don't and have never had any reason why I have to be in Cambodia.
He was appalled that I only had a one year visa and said he'd sort that right away. Phoned his mate in immigration who confirmed to him that that was all that was available to me. He also relayed that plans were afoot to bring in a 5 year visa for retired people and no good bums with some means so I imagine this will come out of the current stuff too.

It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if you're permitted indefinite visa runs. I wonder if continuous back to back visa runs will be tolerated, however.gavinmac wrote:Is having to leave the country every ninety days and then promptly return going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people?

Whatever happened to this "major change" to visa rules from almost exactly one year ago?

A valid concern. Malaysia tolerated it until, one day, they didn't. Unfortunately, that was roughly the time they stiffened the requirements for the Malaysia My Second Home retirement programme. The new requirements included proving the equivalent of roughly USD 4,000/month in pension income, in addition to the fixed deposit they'd always required.Londo wrote:It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if you're permitted indefinite visa runs. Personally, I don't want to be standing at the Immigration desk in Phnom Penh after a visa run only to hear that no entry visa will be issued.
Would going through the process of registering a business and not trading be an option?

An expensive option which most likely would be identified at some stage.Londo wrote:Would going through the process of registering a business and not trading be an option?
Much, much easier to get a consultant position in an already existing company (for a fee).

Afaik all work permits expire on Dec 31st, and you apply for next year's before that (I think its supposed to be November, I can check at work tomorrow). That means anyone applying for a long term visa from September would be doing so with only a couple of months left on the work permit. I can only assume this means you need the permit for the visa to be issued, but that the permit doesn't have to be valid for the full term of the visa.
I don't see how it could work any other way.
Will be interesting to see how they handle the self-employed....the so-called digital nomads and the bar/guesthouse owners and such. I'm sure the former never bothered obtaining work permits before. Not sure about the latter group. Quite a few people might fall into some overlooked black hole. I'll bet the new prakas will be as vague on details as ever.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are some who decide to relocate to the Philippines as a result of this. Six month extensions for three years. After that you just fly out and back in again and you're good to go for another three years.
