Violet dear, im thinking you hopped in the taxi/car without asking "How Much' and they were just asking for some money. you had a panic attack, gave them way too much hence the return of the 10 or 20 bucks.

Is this sorry tale now dead or has it been driven out of everyone's minds by the unfolding saga of the sufferings of Hollywood starlets?

Many of us are probably still pondering what the fuck this is that you wrote earlier...and how the hell you haven't been waxed off this forum for it yet.boozyoldman wrote:Is this sorry tale now dead or has it been driven out of everyone's minds by the unfolding saga of the sufferings of Hollywood starlets?

"Dark and gritty" means dark and gritty, not slightly dark and gritty.
Is Kansaicanuck thinking of the sort of barbecue sauce which claims to be simultaneously spicy and mild?

This is another example of how the mind creates various impressions. Unless your first visit to Cambodia was over ten years ago, this story makes zero sense. The shooting ranges used to be on the outskirts of the city. No way it would take two hours to get there. Another possibility is that they took you to the base where his friend worked (would have been possible many moons ago). However, even then it makes no sense as there are no military bases "in the middle of the jungle"... I'm assuming they brought you to the base by Kompong Speu, but in no way is that the middle of the jungle... Again, the mind creating these magical impressions on our recollections. Unless your first visit was well over a decade ago, then anything is possible but even then the jungle bit is far-fetched and likely a figment of your imagination or interpretation.HaramBarang wrote:Long time lurker, might as well write a post
Last story reminded me of first time in Phnom Penh
Was traveling alone, and wanted to go to shooting range to blow of some steam. Some random tuktuk driver said he knew the guys running it, so I agreed to go with him the next day. He picked me up the day after in a Landcruiser with 3 other guys in it and off we go. I had already said I wanted to shoot the RPG, AK47 and some other guns, so they knew I had lots of cash on me (5-600+USD) Was a bit nervous, as no one would miss me for many days, but was in adventure mode. Around 2 ours out of town we drive in to the jungle and get to a military compound of some sorts, and the guns get loaded into to a pickup and more guys went with us to a shooting range. So there I was, a very white and lonely Norwegian with pockets full of cash, far into the jungle with 6-7 strangers and enough guns to start a guerrilla war. But all went well, I got to shoot everything I wanted and got home safe.
Only "shady" thing is when we stop for dinner on the way back they wanted me to pay for everyone. I didn't invite his friends so I said I will only pay for me and driver, went ok.
Also went through the Poipet border scams, but luckily I met some Spanish dudes and shared a taxi to SR with them.
I could have been robbed so many times in my life, night time pirate taxi alone in Kiev and Egypt, wandering around PP/BKK alone at 4AM, and even went to a full compound drug dealer in Sihanoukville in the middle of the night. (I don't use drugs anymore)
All went well, but it didn't need to. It's a balance between staying safe, but also allow yourself some adventures. I'm not a big guy, but I think it's important to "walk with confidence", not appear like a victim, and a healthy dose of "street smartness" But I also understand it's different if you are a woman...
Like the above said, all's well that ends well

There's Dark and Gritty and then there's penning some rape fantasy that even Billy Corr might find too distasteful.boozyoldman wrote:"Dark and gritty" means dark and gritty, not slightly dark and gritty. ?
I would wager that "dark and gritty" in Violet's words was not meant as a blanket invitation for creepy fuckers to write piss-poor prose about rape fantasy with her in the female lead role.boozyoldman wrote:"Dark and gritty" means dark and gritty, not slightly dark and gritty.

Get some time off to reflect on how much creeps you gave to posters here.

Okok, fine. Maybe not "in the middle of the jungle", I guess when you're used to pine and fir trees things look like jungle quite fast. But it was far out of town, and I remember well it took approx two hours to get there. No houses or anything for a while after we turned from the main road. English is not my main language, but I tried to specify it was not a military base by saying compound. It had a gate and some buildings and shacks scattered around, no idea what the place is called or where it was located. It was five years ago btw, so not that many moons.
It was more the situation I tried to describe, they could easily do bad things with me and no one would know, maybe more likely the driver and his friends than the "military guys".

There was a shooting range near Choueng Ek in a wooded area, and it could have taken quite a while to get there when the road was fucked.
