Living in Cambodia/Abroad permanently
Hello all,
One of the things I haven't been able to get much information on is whether there are expats from America who moved to Cambodia and never went home or is that not common? I see a lot of people who leave for a few years but almost always come back. I'm in school now and I plan on moving when I complete a bachelor's program. Out of all of the countries I've researched Cambodia seems to be the best fit, but I would like to be able to go to Vietnam or Seoul with my degree afterwards and continue to travel and live in various places.
My question is how plausible is this? I do have an intention on coming and visiting Cambodia before I move there. I also will start saving now, to bring a security blanket, but eventually I will only be earning my income oversees.
Are you a permanent expat? Is this common and how long have you lived there?
I should also point out I am a Western woman, maybe someone has input whether that would make a bit of a difference in my experience.
Thank you.

I'm a permanent expat; 10 years now, lived in 4 countries since I Ieft. I'm not going back, probably stay here - one could do worse than PP. I decided to reinvent myself at age 50, went to the university and got my degree in 2007. I used it to escape the US. Absolutely the best decision of my entire life. No regrets, not once. Just do it.

It is generally difficult to earn much money in Cambodia. My best advice would be to have a back up plan to return home if needed....before your skills atrophy to the point that you would have to start a new career from scratch. Living in Cambodia is becoming increasingly expensive....and unless you are earning western wages, you are better off returning home to work.
yes even today as i was walking to central market i had to step over the bodies of at least three khmers who had died on the street due to it being too expensive.LoneStar wrote:It is generally difficult to earn much money in Cambodia. That's so amazing and that is exactly what I want to do! I'm 25, no college credits yet, I dropped out when I was 18. I want to go and get my degree and leave so if I have to I'll find work back here, but I don't think I would ever come back. I want to make my dream of travel a reality and I've figured out that it's way more in reach than I imagined.rgrowden wrote:I'm a permanent expat; 10 years now, lived in 4 countries since I Ieft. What countries have you lived in? And if I may ask what field are you in? Any input on a particular field to go in that will help you find work in major Southeast Asian cities? Also, how hard was is to pick up and move in the next country (financially, and easily)?

I'm going to get a 4 year before I move. I'm sure saving will be difficult if I did decide to come back to America (which I'm 99.9% positive that I wouldn't).LoneStar wrote:It is generally difficult to earn much money in Cambodia. Would my degree get me just as far in their countries? I mean, having a skill or something should put me at a higher pay rate while cost of living is still low right? Even if that kind of opportunity isn't in Cambodia, it could be in Vietnam or Malaysia or somewhere else even. I don't want to settle down somewhere until I have been and seen a lot of different places.

Have you traveled to Cambodia yet? It's a great country, but very different than America. I know a few individuals who loved Cambodia, but simply could not stay due to the heat, others because of their health, lack of money, some lost their lives and more because they lost their way. Kind of like anywhere really. It's not like Cambodia is a place you can escape your problems. It might be a place that could help you through them....maybe. I think it's a place where you could spend a lot of time and for a few, the rest of their lives. It's a special place, but it comes at a price. You give up a lot of what you left behind, but you gain peace, relaxation, and adventure. I lived in Cambodia for two years and loved it. I lived in Thailand for a year and loved it. Out of the two, Id choose Cambodia only if your health is perfect and you don't have to rely on making a living. In Thailand, you can earn a living and the health care is exceptional. On a side note, I doubt I ever live in the US again, but I don't restrict myself to a single country. Yes, there are Americans who settled in Cambodia, a few that post here and the ones I know seem very content. Where ever you end up, have fun and don't be a dick.

My replies to the earlier comments have not posted yet. Newb here, but I'm definitely not going to escape any problems. It's the exact opposite. I'm not going for a wrong reason I believe, to work less, to party, to make life "easier". (I don't believe that is possible) You can always change your environment, but your baggage always trails. I've just been searching my entire life for what profession to go into, as I haven't found my passion yet. I've always talked about traveling the world , but I never found it plausible until now. The only person who was stopping me from living my dream and thinking about it from an actual financial and realistic life changing move was myself. I want to work hard here and get my degree first to see things and live in different places/cultures. But working along the way and eventually settling somewhere in Asia. The heat is definitely a concern of mine, but I hate winter too, catch-22. Bugs as well, I'm not a fan, but I want to place myself out of my comfort zone and force myself to deal with the insects and try it. From what I've read that is one of the only things that makes me a little hesitant to go. Which is why I'll definitely visit first. As a person I'm kind and also very firm as well. I have an open mind, I work at a Prison and grew up in Foster Care so I'm not the naive trusting type either. I just wanted to point that out that because I feel my qualities would help me in adjusting.offshoresports wrote:Have you traveled to Cambodia yet? That's exactly what I was looking for. Downsizing, less materializing, being free with adventure and spirit kinda. And that is great to hear! I want to venture out and not just settle in one country. Maybe after awhile or I find the perfect location for me and stay.
I just want to be comfortable, bring a skill and something to offer to wherever I'm staying. Have money to eat, have a place that doesn't have to be perfect, have time and money to visit beaches and landscapes from bordering countries. And that's all I need. Maybe my own motor-scooter. We'll see.

Nah mate. Most of them don't have a passport and think Central America is Kansas. Plus you can't carry a gun here.Sking218 wrote: One of the things I haven't been able to get much information on is whether there are expats from America who moved to Cambodia and never went home or is that not common?
