2 CNY weekend local drivers refueling after waiting to collect us
We had two local drivers over the CNY weekend in Kampot and regardless how early they arrived before the agreed pickup time as soon as we departed both stopped to buy fuel
Wouldn’t common sense tell you to arrived already fueled up?

First: fuel is probably cheaper outside of Kampot, so refueling on the way saves them a ride and some money.
Second, they probably refueled with LPG which is far from available at every station.
Third: welcome to Cambodia, where they do things their way.

I once had a car that arrived and the dude hadn't killed a little mosquito that buzzed around the back until eventually flying out the window I had to open and let all the air-con out. It was an almighty inconvenience, you can check the full story on my blog.

It's common all over the developing world. Most taxi drivers drive cars that have less than an eighth of a tank of gas at virtually all times. They don't put gas in the car unless absolutely necessary, because the money spent on gas might otherwise be better spent on food. If they put $15 of gas in the car before a long distance trip and the passengers don't show up, then they are broke for a week.

On one occasion I was asked could I "lend" the driver money so that he could buy fuel for the car.
As this was merely a part payment half way through the journey it seemed quite reasonable, I paid him the remainder of the fare when we arrived at the destination an hour later.

Haha, I sometime take a taxi to other provinces they would sometime ask me to pay some so they could have change to the customers who leave first or to fill the gas. or stop to eat.

Fair enough if the guys only want to put petrol once they know the passengers actually show up. But this has also happened to me when the car was pre-booked and pre-paid.

Failing to see much drama here.
I’m sure there are greater concerns on the roads than maybe losing 3 minutes as they fuel up.

At Le Mans the support team can refuel you in under a minute. In Cambodia it's more in the region of 30 minutes.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Failing to see much drama here.
