Hainan island gambling is a done deal.(MGM Grand Corp already has a hotel there and will be first in line for a gambling license.) They are already talking about a third airport to handle the tourists/gamblers. Google Operation Chain Break, and you will see that the Chinese government ripped up a bunch of passports in the Philippines and Taiwan. It is illegal for a Chinese citizens to travel to another county for the purpose of engaging in gambling.(they have to get special permission to gamble in Macau.) Its illegal for Chinese to use money from China to build casino's. Its illegal for Chinese travel agencies to advertise gambling junkets. Check out the Chinese anti-gambling laws passed Aug 17, 2017. The truth is out there.
I predict in 10 to 12 months lots of empty buildings in Sihanoukville. As to Hainan Island online gambling to take years to compete with Sihanoukville as some say here. All it takes is a piece of paper(license) issued by a government that's tired of gambling money leaving China and loves bankrupting the "black money" people, and some computer designers setting up sites and within weeks they are online. How long did it take to set up the internet gambling based in Sihanoukville? Not long! You don't believe MGM Grand Corp doesn't have all of this set up now and ready to go? About the time Hainan Island internet gambling comes online, the Chinese government makes a massive sweep through Sihanoukville ripping up passports. Bye-Bye Chinese. Although the industrial park and the project at Otres will still be around, just empty downtown casinos, guesthouses, bungalows, apartment buildings.

Operation Chain break doesn't exist? I cry BS! Google: Casino.org March 30, 2017, "China Cracks Down On Foreign Operators Marketing Gambling To Its Citizens."
Wow. One operation to target foreign junket sellers within China.
Dream on.
Dream on.

Very little will change, the Chinese make sweeps from time to time already sending folks back to the mainland. They fill back up with newbies. Your post is too hopeful in its nature. Curious, do you hate gambling or the Chinese or both?oldmariner wrote:Hainan island gambling is a done deal.(MGM Grand Corp already has a hotel there and will be first in line for a gambling license.) I am prepared to bet you $1,000 that in 12 months there will still be 30 casinos operating in Sihanoukville.oldmariner wrote:

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
Somewhat related, word in Thailand is that the first casino licenses will be granted soon (respectfully waiting for one year after the death of King Bhunipol). The first one supposedly in Jomtien, Pattaya, with more to follow.

Agree, and I think 30 is a conservative estimate.LaudJohn wrote:I am prepared to bet you $1,000 that in 12 months there will still be 30 casinos operating in Sihanoukville.oldmariner wrote:

What happens in Sinville stays in Sinville
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

It's the most interesting question in SHV at the moment - Is it The New Macau or is the place screwed? Vegas was built on dirty money no? So who knows?
I'd say it's abit screwed as far as western visitors are concerned, apart from maybe the islands.
You cannot deny the place has abit of a surreal feel to it now. It's not really a khmer town anymore. You gotta feel abit sad for all those evicted bar owners on the beach. Most decent sized apartment blocks from Ocheuteal beach all the way to Victory beach have been taken over by the casino workers. We got evicted by operators who only leased the place for 1 year! It all seems to have abit of a short term feel to it. Rented apartment rooms filled with bunk beds everywhere.
Is there a danger of SHV becoming like one of China's ''ghost cities'' ? By many economists, China's property market is being compared to the Dutch tulip mania.
Is this a bubble to end all bubbles? Quite probably, yes. Total home loans are expected to be around 30% of GDP this year versus 20% in 2014. No less than 80% of all bank lending in January-August was to the real estate sector.
I blame western central bankers. The fuckers.
I'm off to Thailand and Myanmar soon. I've heard Myanmar is even nicer than the Philippines!?

It’s like the journalist has just read Expats and locals... on FB and thrown in some hyperbole and quotes!
Too much (way) too soon. Or growing pains.
As my grandad used to say “It’ll all come out in the wash”.

The 30 casino's in Chinaville will still be there, but will be empty. Yes, after being kicked out of two bungalows, I dislike Chinese. They are like locust. They drive worse than the Khmers (if that's possible.) The faster they go to Hainan Island the better. The Chinese government will not allow what's going on in Sihanoukville much longer.
Yes. That’s right. Well done.
>pat on head<
I’ll also put in $1000 with LJ. Come on SM/OM put your money where your big mouth is. Take the bet.
