one my khmer clients is being scammed and i cant convince him to stop the deal
apparently most Cambodians believe in the existence of a rare "almost magical" material called "samrut" which google translates into bronze but locals say it is not "just" bronze.
this material is considered extremely valuable yet if after a quick research i am 99.99% sure its just bullshit and superstition.
Apparently this material looks like a dark and "very cold" metal with some very unique properties which are quite unbelievable; such as being very heavy and dense when weighted on a scale yet floating in water as well as other oddities such as it makes your mobile phone signal go away if you put it too close to your phone and it hurts or is very unpleasant to your hand when holding it.
One of my clients really wants to buy this material from another local seller and asked me to to ensure that the money transaction (which is being sold at 20% above gold value for 1.3kg of the stuff) goes smoothly, but now i am positive he is being scammed; even if he saw the material and his properties himself i am pretty sure it was just some magic trick scam.
Unfortunately my client (local, elderly wealthy man) doesn't listen to my advice of involving a geologist or a laboratory and tells me that as a foreigner i just don't know about this stuff, I have being working well with this person in the past and i would avoid ruining the relationship over this.
Any suggestions?

I'd decline to help in anyway and explain my misgivings but he's an adult and you can't stop him from making his own mistakes. If he can afford it, as you suggested in the OP, then I wouldn't make a big fuss and risk souring the relationship. And if most Cambodians believe in it he shouldn't have too much trouble selling it on at a future date.

I’ve had similar experiences with pyramid schemes.
All you can do is give advice and if they don’t want to receive it then so be it.
Don’t stress it. Just give your opinion and let it go. In my situation my friend already had their mind firmly made up and my negativity wasn’t well received. When it became clear to them that they were scammed and had lost significant money they reluctantly acknowledged that ‘i might have been right’.
It helped them listen to me the next time a get rich quick scheme came along.

the main issue for me is that i am on a very good retainer (he pays me a fixed amount for a number of monthly hours of work regardless if used or not) from this guy and refusing to help the transaction means breaking the contract, losing the retainer and damage my image in front of his rich friends.
helping him and following the transaction he will find out that he is being scammed when he will try to perform the same tricks to his friends and blame me for not having noticed that the seller "switched" (even if it was not actually switched i am not sure how the trick works) the stones thus ruining my image again. its a catch 22.

Get him to sign a memorandum detailing the situation, and then proceed as instructed. Simple.

You're not his effing mother, you're an employee. Do what you're told. Jeesh, why complicate things?

OP,
Some might laugh at you and poke fun and say it's not your problem.
But I appreciate your involvement and the obligation you feel to your friend / client, and your wish to protect him and your relationship with him.
All you can do is research the topic as best you can and send him an email with all the links to the scamming and rip off merchants related to this issue.
Don't tell him he is a fuckwit and being scammed,
It wont get you any where.
Just let him know that some people sell fake "samrut" and he needs to make sure he is not being lied to.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

If You Don't Believe, Don't be Contemptuous! Bronze Foam is a Rare Object that is Efficacious in Bringing Success and Power
http://read.konpov.com/post/3702
The magical substance is ពពុះសំរិទ្ធ (Foam/Bubbles of Bronze). The article you linked to is about a Bronze con, but not a ពពុះសំរិទ្ធ con.
Scoffers advice is solid, tell your man to be careful that he's not being conned, but if he believes and has the money: let him believe and spend his money how he sees fit.
Khmers' belief in magical objects is often beyond a "belief"...Within most belief there is room for a doubt. With these types of magical objects if there is even the smallest inkling of a doubt in the power of the object in the mind of the owner the possibility arises (brought about by the owner's doubt) that the object will lose is efficacy..The object and the owner work together...there is no room for a doubt...if jackrossi had this stuff it wouldn't work because jackrossi doesn't believe it will work, if your guy has it, it will work because it will work.
Perfect stuff for a con.

Only option I see, is to respect his choice, let him fail AND never ever talk about this again.
In future, he'll remember, you warned him, etc. But don't let him loose face. He'll remember both your advise and not letting him loose face.
