As far as I know this was a bloodless invasion, as the French authorities were Pétainists. Anyway, there are some great shots of a very different capital in 1940:
More city shots and Japanese/ French collusion and some shots of a ceremony at the Monument Aux Morts:
Cambodian trade fair in 1943 :
And on a different note this barely recognizable footage of Phnom Penh in 1989. Worth watching just for the "Oi - fuck off you little shit" segment at the start.
Loads of others there too, it's unfortunate that they are watermarked but it's fairly light so they are still watchable:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Slightly less traumatic than Nanking.

I have read books by two different POWs who were taken by train to Phnom Penh. They walked to the docks and were out on ships to Saigon. they describe curious Khmers and French expats coming out to have a look at the motley crew marching past. The French weren't banged up until 1944 I think. I have another book called Escape from Battambang written by a Chinese chap who was recruited with his mate in Singapore to work for the Japs building a barracks near Battambong.
One night they escaped with the cook and the ration money and took the train to Bangkok. There they hid out for over a year before the war ended and they were repatriated to Singapore. The author became a CEO of one of the large British trading companies later on.
Good work LL.

There is also some footage of when the Vietnamese army entered Phnom Penh in 1979. I did come across some of the clips some time ago but can not seem to find them again. They were taken by a German film crew who were embedded with the Vietnamese as they made their way to PP.Lucky Lucan wrote:Withdrawal of Vietnamese army in 1989...
