Where's the best place to get a cheap android phone rooted? I have tried the apps online without success, so maybe it's time to take it somewhere to have done.
I would also like to operate it as a Linux phone after dumping all, or at least the majority, of the Google stuff.
I would still like to use gmail /drive / gmaps etc, but not necessarily as individual apps.
Anyone have a reccomendation for which Linux version is best?
Will I still be able to run the programs I have already from the play store?
And any positive v negatives in doing this.
Regards
Rooting an Android Phone
you don't want to switch your phone to linux.
basically you need to have an unlocked bootloader then
1. install TWRP recovery using ADB Fastboot software from computer. By installing the ADB Fastboot on your computer then put your phone into fastboot mode usually done by pressing the volume down and the power button hold the button for about 15 seconds till your phone reboots into fastboot mode. Then flash the TWRP recovery.
2 Then you put the latest Superuser SU zip file on the internal memory of your phone.
3. Then boot into TWRP recovery by holding the volume up and the power button for about 15 seconds un till it boots into TWRP recovery.
4. then press install and select the Superuser SU zip file you put on the internal memory.
That it not hard to do but a little confusing the first time and there can be subtle differences from manufactures so get on a forum like XDA Forum and find your specific device and follow their instructions.
if you want to get rid of all the bloat/google junk then also install GApps from TWRP their are many versions I use pico which allows the use of google store but without all the other junk. There is an offical GApps page to download the one you want you need to know some info from you phones settings, like architecture (ARM< ARM64 etc) and android versionto the internal memory of the phone. That is usually done before the Superuser SU zip.

Thanks for the info. Can i ask approximately how much hard drive and ram space is used once everything is installed amd running, and the Google ( and android?) Apps are removed? Does it use the processor and ram more efficiently? Eg. Increase phone speed without over clocking etc?Beaker wrote:you don't want to switch your phone to linux.

It does save the rom as less stuff is in the system apps with smaller pico GApps so saves ram too. How much I couldn't say but you can usually find that information in the system app. Once you are rooted tho you can increase the ram which will make for a faster phone in my case my phone has 3G of ram I use an app for rooted phone called ramexpander which uses some memory on SD card or phone to create a swap file that acts like ram and increases my ram to 6G. I don't mess with overclocking don't really need it and i think there could be problems the least of which would be overheating. I also use titanium backup which beside backing up all the stuff on my phone has the ability to freeze apps in affect is like deleting them so is much safer to use on system apps that could cause problems if completely removed.Oldnews wrote:Thanks for the info. Another thing you will want to have is a program to FASTBOOT flash the stock recovery ROM. Just in case something goes wrong. Can't really suggest one as my phone is a xioami and so I use MI Flash Tool I think it can be done with the same ADB Fastboot software used to install TWRP but I haven't done it that way.

The savings of space is not why I root my phones it is because I don't like all the ads and google crap I use the google store to install some apps and thats all the rest are from torrents that are either cracked or patched to work.

I wish this discussion came with Flip Pictures just so I could understand what they were talking about.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

There is also an app called Flashify where you get the app from the google store then just load the TWRP recovery zip file on ;your phone and run the app and it installs the custom TWRP recovery here is a video --->
click show more on the video notes and download links are given.
But all phone manufactures have slightly different variations so without the phone manufacturer and model I can't be more specific.

Thanks for the advice and info. Apparently the Redmi 4, approx 150$ in Cambodia, is a good phone to put a new front end on. You install something called Linage on it along with TWRP boot loader ( along with Superuser apk and su and the flasher for the recovery ROM). My free phone, Huawei T 3 7 running Nougat doesn't seem to be rootable or support Linage. Unless anyone can point me in the right direction?
Linage
Things I have found out from others if your phone supports it are; it uses much less HD space, runs
programs that look remarkably like Linux. I haven't used Linux for years, so maybe they are the same? , Apart from Open VPN, VLC and a couple of others that are the same on all platforms There are map, phone, messaging, video, Youtube, Firefox etcetc apps that replace the Google stuff etc, and you get a fully functioning smart phone, at least on the Redmi 4.
BTW, TWRP and Linage are free.
I like the idea of the ram doubler too.
I would definitely give Superuser apk and su a go if I could root my phone? Can't find anything worth while on it on the XDA site.

I have not had much luck with lineage ROMs on my MI 4 prime the rom I use is Epic ROM
I doubt if you will find a custom ROM for this as not that popular.
It has been rooted by others read through this ---> https://forum.xda-developers.com/genera ... 7-t3647767
Doesn't seem worth the hassle because in the end your going to have the same cheap tablet no matter what you do
I don't recommend the mi 4, no SD card slot for one reason,.a much better phone is the mi note 3 prime that you may be able to pick up around the same price. Check out the MIUI forum for more phone info. I purchased my wife's MI note 3 prime and my phone MI 4 prime from gearbest on what they call flash sales, which are newer releases both were around the $200. mark.
here is a link to a flash sale for the Huawei P9 Lite for $240. with shipping looks like a good phone --> https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp ... id=1527929

Kongo root does root most of phones. You can choose PC version which is better a bit. Very easy.
It's my experience that they don't install 'Chainfire Superuser SU' but use a bastardized superuser that will be very hard to remove and make it impossible to install the proper superuser and will redirect you to lots a adware and install other apps like cleaning , battery monitor and security apps that will do the same (adding ads and redirects)yg11 wrote:Kongo root does root most of phones. You will also not have a reliable recovery such as CWM or TWRP

I've never heard of Kongo root but have bricked to tablets by rooting with kingoroot they works for a while but then brickedyg11 wrote:Kongo root does root most of phones. You can choose PC version which is better a bit. Very easy.
and then the stock recovery would not work

Yes, sorry, of course Kingroot. Actually, I've rooted at least 10 phones with no problems and you can replace Kingroot SU to original SU if you wish. Definitely TPRW is better but Kingroot is very simple.

I got a second hand but genuine Samsung phone at Psar Sankge for $28 because the seller couldn't get it to work properly. It had kingoroot on, which seemed to be causing problems. I cleaned the phone a number of times but it kept reverting to its original state of not working properly. I tried a hard reset, but unwanted malware kept reappearing. In the end I had to get the original firmware off the net and re flash the bios. It took me a month to fix, so perhaps it was not that much of a bargain
