So it goes like this: write a pathetic apology, get released after the election and taxi to Pochentong?

I nearly spat out my coffee in laughter when I read the news article which stated that Ricketson had sent an apology letter to the PM. So is he also admitting that for the past 7 years while he has been defaming every person under the sun that he was doing it because he was a stupid, naive moron? Im sure the PM is many things but what he is not is stupid - Ricketson has finally realized that he is going down the toilet for a few years and now he is trying anything to get out of prison. Well I say good riddance to you Ricketson - you are an unhinged menace, driven by blind, jealous hate of anyone who doesn't agree with your agenda. Cambodia hasn't missed a minutes sleep while you have been locked up in prison and it couldn't of happened to a better person. As for your pathetic apology to the PM; there is one thing for sure. If you are released from prison and deported, within 5 minutes of leaving Cambodia airspace, you will be on social media writing vile drivel about the Government and others you have previously defamed.

Ricketson appeared in court in yesterday. He once again got what he requested: a delay in the trial.
So he has 400 pages of evidence, for some reason he has a brand new "legal team", and now he's been granted a delay on 16 August.
Spying case against Ricketson delayedThe hearing on the espionage case against Australian filmmaker James Ricketson was postponed again on Monday at the request of the defendant and his legal team.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court delayed the trial late last month after Ricketson’s lawyer asked for a continuance.
At Monday’s hearing, Ricketson was accompanied by a new legal team – Kong Sam Onn and Peung Yok Hiep. He and his attorneys requested another delay, citing the need to study a 400-page evidentiary document that was only recently received.
Sam Onn provided two reasons for the delay.
“I requested a delay because I was just hired by my client and haven’t studied the case clearly and the 400-pages of evidence. Secondly, I need to meet with my client at the prison to discuss the case further,” he said.

I guess his letter didn't do the trick
He was dumped by one of his lawyers last year because he's an annoying twat
https://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/ ... ain-lawyerHis former lawyer, Ou Helene, said that she dropped the case when the Appeal Court rejected his bail request on August 9. “I am busy with work and . . . it bore no good result,” she said. “He kept calling to tell the lawyer about his difficulty [in prison], so I found it hard [to work] with him.”
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — An Australian filmmaker went on trial in Cambodia on Thursday on charges of endangering national security after he was arrested last year for flying a drone to capture images of an opposition political rally.
James Ricketson was taken in an orange prison uniform to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for a hearing on the charges, which in legal terms are tantamount to espionage, for which he could be sentenced to five to 10 years in prison. Ricketson’s lawyer applied for his release on bail, as he had unsuccessfully done several times previously, but was again turned down by the judge.
The 69-year-old documentary maker was arrested in June last year after he used a drone to film the final rally of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party before local elections. The party has since been dissolved as part of a sweeping crackdown on the opposition and media critical of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government.
The crackdown was widely seen as preparation for ensuring a victory by Hun Sen’s ruling party in last month’s general election, in which it won all 125 seats in the National Assembly. With Hun Sen’s extension of power accomplished, there has been speculation the courts — widely seen as under government control — might allow Ricketson to walk free. Ricketson had been seen as sympathetic to the opposition party.
Despite his extended pre-trial detention, the official start of Ricketson’s trial has been twice postponed at his request, the first time to inspect further evidence and the second to acquaint a new lawyer with the case. According to his family, Ricketson has been detained in a 6-by-16-meter (20-by-52-foot) cell along with 140 other prisoners, and in May he reportedly became ill with a chest ailment and was moved to the prison hospital.
When taken to court in June, he reiterated to reporters his insistence that he was innocent of any wrongdoing and was dismissive of the accusation of espionage.
But in a July 1 letter to Hun Sen published in the pro-government Khmer Times newspaper, he apologized for his “mistake” in his statements about his situation.
“May I please, respectfully, send my sincerest apologies to yourself and the Cambodian government. I now realize that my statements I have made in the press and other media are disruptive and ill informed. These statements were made from a place of foreign naivety and ignorance about the complexities and difficulties of governing Cambodia,” he wrote.
“I apologize unreservedly and without condition for any distress I may have caused as a result of my ignorance of Cambodian issues. If there is anything I can do to remedy my mistake, please let me know as I only want the best for you and Cambodia,” the letter said.

By Erin Handley
Phnom Penh: Acclaimed Australian director Peter Weir has testified during the unprecedented espionage trial in Cambodia of Australian filmmaker James Ricketson.
Ricketson, 68, was denied bail on Thursday. He was arrested in June last year after he was seen flying a drone above an opposition party rally.
He has spent the past 14 months incarcerated in Phnom Penh’s notoriously overcrowded Prey Sar prison. His trial began in the Cambodian capital after a number of false starts.
“I feel very confident that the judge will find there’s no evidence at all,” Ricketson said before walking into the courtroom.
Presiding Judge Seng Leang denied Ricketson’s request for bail, even as his lawyers argued he should be released on health and other grounds.
Weir, the director of high-profile films including Picnic at Hanging Rock, Dead Poet’s Society and The Truman Show, was the first witness to be questioned in court about Ricketson’s alleged spying activities
Weir said he had been a friend and colleague to Ricketson for more than 45 years and could attest to his character.
“[His films] are made with passion and a concern for the human condition,” Weir said, adding that Ricketson had a profound interest in Cambodia and its people.
He said Ricketson’s strong convictions had sometimes led to disputes in Australia’s film scene.
“He could annoy people with his words. He would argue ... passionately for a belief,” Weir said.
“He could never make propaganda.”
Weir said Ricketson’s success with filmmaking was paralleled with that of raising his children - his son Jesse and his adopted daughters, Roxanne in Australia and Chanti in Cambodia.
The judge then questioned Weir about whether Ricketson - who has made documentaries for the ABC in the past - received Australian government funding for his films in Cambodia, a question Weir said should be asked directly of Ricketson.
Ricketson also told the court that he had previously been tried and convicted in absentia for defamation involving an Australian church.
Ricketson is facing up to 10 years behind bars under Article 446 of the Cambodian Criminal Code, which describes collecting information that could jeopardise Cambodia’s national defence as espionage.
Weir said the espionage charge was an “unfortunate misunderstanding”, possibly due to a “clash of cultures”.
“Like oxygen, we breathed freedom of speech our entire lives,” Weir said. “We speak without fear.”
Cambodia's government has sharply cracked down on the free press and political freedom in the past year.
The opposition party Ricketson filmed was forcibly dissolved by Cambodia’s Supreme Court months after Ricketson’s arrest - a decision that saw the ruling party sweep to victory last month.
“Australia is disappointed that Cambodian people have been unable to freely choose their representatives," Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in response the election.
The trial is set to continue on August 20.

Well, I guess he thinks it’s going well.

"It’s nice to see the Cambodian legal system functioning well. We feel really positive and confident that we’re going to see a good result here. We thank the judges for their professionalism."
https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/ ... 4zynx.htmlRicketson said he felt the trial session had gone “wonderfully” and that much of the tension had been diffused.
“I think they understand that I am not a spy,” he said.
Quite smart... publicly denouncing a country’s legal system isn’t the wisest thing to do... look what happened to that Lance guy from Pattaya....
