Any tips/experience appreciated.
Heading back to Oz shortly and would like to do some travel through Sumatra, Borneo and Java, most likely ending up in Bali for the last drink.
Earthquakes and volcanoes aside, it looks ok to just hoof it around.
Thanks in advance.
A heads up on Indonesia travel.

I have just spent two months cycling around Sumatra. What do you want to know? The Minang and Padang food is amazing. Beer is very expensive and quite often not at all available. The roads are shit. The hotels are a little bit better than Malaysia and nearly always serve a free breakfast which means you will very quickly get pissed off with fried rice. Coffee is very very good but never filtered so there is a sludge at the end. People are okay. Anything else just ask.

I wouldn't bother with lake Toba unless you have yer own wheels and tour around the crater, the island is not worth bothering with. The two lakes close to Bukkitinnggi are way better, almost no tourists and much friendlier more real vibe.

I like Sumatra but it can't be rushed and a few towns really come into their own after a few days and the locals treat you very differently once they have got used to your face.
I could have easily spent a whole month just around Bukittingi and it's hills n lakes, amazing rides to be had there. Also Padang and the islands off it merit a return visit - I never made it to the islands but a surtfer showed me his photos, unspoilt.
Never made it to Aceh or the southern tip either, there's a lot to do n see a small island it ain't.

Yea I just never realized how big the Indonesian archipelago is, 13, 500 islands?...think I left my run too late this time but will plan a longer trip for next year. Have a mate who's been sailing for a few years and recommends Borneo, his yacht is up on blocks there and he's back in Oz after Tanduay Rum problems in the Philippines (it's not Marvin). Did think of starting at Aceh and head SE to Bali beyond but now will cut the trip short and start in Jakarta/Java. Hopefully next year my mate and his small yacht will be back in action and I'll have more time.
Looks good out there and thanks for the info on Sumatra.
