Navigational abilities
Expats often comment on (and make fun of) the inability of many Khmers to be able to read maps. It's so ingrained in Western culture to read maps, and to work on having a good sense of direction, that most of us probably don't remember first learning learning these basic skills.
Here's an interesting article about why men are better navigators than women. In summary, the conclusion comes to: "countries where there is high equality between men and women, the difference between men and women is very small on our spatial navigation test. But when there's high inequality the difference between men and women is much bigger. And that suggests the culture people are living in has an effect on their cognitive abilities." The study finds, unsurprisingly, that people in wealthier countries tend to be the best navigators.
The unpleasant reason men navigate better than women
Just some food for thought before you scream at your next TukTuk/PassAp driver for not being able to read the map.

Was in a PassApp yesterday and the driver twisted his phone on its cradle every time he turned a corner . He did it so often and so violently that he broke his charging cable.
In my household, my wife is a much better navigator than me, when we go anywhere new she always gets the lie of the land quicker than me. And in the Thailand and Singapore mega-malls I could be lost for days if i wander in without suitable supervision!
But surely the Khmer thing has to be largely experience. Most Khmer folk have grown up never having seen a map - it’s not surprising that they now look at one like it is assembly instructions for the starship enterprise!

There are strong magnetic fields around markets that make tuktuk drivers gravitate towards them. If you are going to cross Monivong to go to Riverside you must spend 30 minutes driving around Central Market. I cannot make a rice!

Khmers navigate using Markets, Wats, and High Schools. If you know the nearest one to your destination then you will never get lost

Men outperform women in spatial tests, due to differences in brain structure, according to a lot of research based on CAT scans.

That is why it is much harder for women to pass the tests to become a fighterpilot, where only 2% are female. It is more than just social stigma.
But I agree that ones social environment and upbringing is key to using modern map apps properly. I can not use a map to explain anything to the fam here, but I've seen a few younger rickshaw drivers using the passapp map, just fine, without turning the phone around.

I think the statement that men make better navigators than women is just sexist and the kind of thinking that belongs in the stone age tbh.
The real problem with chicks navigating is that they are generally multi tasking whilst driving imo. eg, Driving, whilst putting on lipstick in the rear view mirror and frisking the hair...whilst checking Facebook for messages...phoning the kids...whilst humming along to Beyonce etc.

"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
With practice and memory a person can increase the size of their hippocampi, just like the taxi drivers in London.

i figure that khmers dont need to be able to navigate pp, they never walk anywhere at all and when wanting to go somewhere its just grab an omnipresent moto/tuktuk
WARNING: this post is not intended for the mentally impaired perhaps search for the chicken's post and read them instead. thanks.

I am most def. not your average sexist, and have seen women perform tasks much better than men many of times, as the brain can be trained up to almost anything, building synapses by the billion in and around the neo cortex, .. but there are natural differences, probably going back to the times, where women were at the village taking care of the kids, and needed their natural multitasking abilities, and better sensual perception towards color, and high frequency audio, (babies crying, skin rash, etc.) also women like conversation more than men on average, which also is a factor when raising kids.
while men out doing the somewhat simpler bow and arrow task in the woods.
In these post 70's pc environment, it seems one can't bring any diff. up without being accused of being a neanderthal of some sort.
This is a great read actually, two Aussie docs. btw.

Just recently i interviewed a Captain for our new boat,i explained that we needed someone that has experience on the Tonle Sap delta,as well as the rivers and lakes.he suggested that he can not operate a vessel without GPS.Well even though all our boats have GPS they are not much help in the delta, with the constantly changing water levels,
