What would you do?
Simple BUY the security guard a cheap old style bike and a lock for yours. He can go off get noodles and your bike will remain locked up when hes not there...if you lock it to a fixed post etc......

It's easy. For revenge, just film him when he's asleep and then put it on FB. Khmer security guards always catching up on some Zzz's at some point...half falling off the chair.

I was having heart palpitations that I was giving 4 weeks extra maternity leave unnecessarily!Miguelito wrote:Twelve weeks actually...Playboy wrote:But of courseMcPhisto wrote:After you having paid them to sit at home and change junior's nappies for eight weeks.Playboy wrote:You mean, 'Take maternity leave, then never come back to work because, Married and have baby already, so why work??!?

Pecahead,
Didn't you stay at the Himawari when you first came to Cambodia? I mean, you paid at least a dime a month for that spot. I assume you can pack your stuff up and find a better apartment. If people (including your landlord) don't respect your property they or you need to go. BTW, flipping out in Cambodia has never once helped me. Good luck

So what was the outcome Peca? you get your bike? you have a throw down? enquiring minds wanna know!
The resolution to the issue was that when I went home, I saw the guard lounging around like nothing had happened and I saw my bicycle was back in the parking area. He was dozing already and I made a loud remark while waiting for the elevator like "have a nice ride, bud?" Which dazed him (he speaks no English, young country bumpkin, maybe mid-20s, no training in security and in fact doesn't even wear a security uniform). I had invited a motodup into the parking area and told him the security guard would pay him my fee as I quickly ducked onto the elevator (when I came back down the motodup was gone so assuming he got paid).
There's some kind of office on the first floor so after I showered up I went to the office and asked a woman there to come down and translate. I didn't mean to drag her into it but I ended up becoming exasperated at the total non-caring attitude of the guard. He admitted to taking it to get food at the market--and I mean admitted it like it was completely normal, not even sheepish about it as far as I can tell. I think in my mind (and I lived in PP for 7 of the past 8 years) I've become so numb to things like this that my only recourse is to lament to online forums because even I have come to accept this as "normal."
I asked for his phone, put it in my pocket and pretended to walk away and then, when he made a strange, uncomprehending face, said something like, "don't like when people take your stuff without asking?" Maybe he got it, maybe not. You can only help people who want to be helped.
I said if he wanted to take it, he should have asked and maybe I would have said he could borrow it if he brought it back when I need it to go (I probably would've said no if he had, but I figured I'd make the point regardless). I ended with "don't take my shit every again and we won't have a problem."
tl;dr -- not a huge deal; got the bike back; don't think he'll do it again; Cambodia.

Khmers, especially poor Khmers, don't really have personal property, right? Everything is sort of communal. That's why whenever I see a tuk tuk driver sitting on a tuk tuk, and he says "tuk tuk?" and I say "yes," he will immediately hop off the tuk tuk and run to a nearby tuk tuk and wake up a guy sleeping in the back of it and then drive me in that different tuk tuk from the one he was just sitting on.

Yeah I think that’s kind of it.gavinmac wrote:Khmers, especially poor Khmers, don't really have personal property, right? Everything is sort of communal. I had a bit of frustration a few years back when some staff were taking things from the office to their home. One guy took a filing cabinet home, because ‘you bought it for me and I will use it more at home’ - then he had the cheek to put a requisition in for a new one for work when I complained about him being disorganised. It was only when he asked for a new one that I realised that the old one was gone. It was returned a few days later & he asked me to pay for transport costs!

This story makes some sense and no goddam sense. Peca claims to have lived in PP for nearly 8 years, yet (due to him talkin so much on the forums is some kinda educator, the fact he pays $450 says he's higher up than your average joe) yet I deduce from all his time here he doesn't know how to speak a jot of Khmer. kinda embarrassing. Some others mocked you as a newbie but after I read that sweet sweet tale you wrote about the motodop, well it was like Cambodia's answer to brokeback mountian, replete with you dressed like you were from the blue oyster bar like WTF MAN
