I'm coming over to PP soon to live and want to arrange some health insurance when I get there. I'm currently living in Bangkok with NO insurance whatsoever but don't want to risk it in Cambodia.
What's the easiest (and quite cheap) insurance you can get to cover you for PP - one that pays the bills up front so that you do not need to claim back (in case I don't have enough cash) - can you arrange some deal with the Calmette hospital for example?
Thanks
Reasonable health insurance for single man - least hassle.

But seriously, this topic was covered pretty recently in a thread started by Kostal. The findings were that you can get it from as little as about $350 and can potentially pay a maximum of bazillions. This site does have a search function.

First rule in cambodia is that if you are going into calmette Hospital you are going to be going out dead. Despite its name, its not a hospital, its a morgue. Forget about it.
Ive recently done the tour of insurances here.
There is -
Forte - has a maximum payout of $30,000 and is pretty crap all round
AG Insurance - located at Cambodiana and equally crap and difficult to even get quotes from.
Infinity Insurance - on Norodom Boulevard. The newest and best of the bunch for a complete health insurance option. It will cover outpaitent fees (just going to the doctor), med-evac (and to the country of your choice), and all kinds of disastrous things youd want covered if the worst was to happen to you. For around US$1300/year you can get full cover, without any limits, for both in Cambodia and for cases when you need to go out of the country for professional care.
Infinity actually has 3 different companies plans you can choose from all offering varying levels of care, but the one I speak of above is the most complete. ITs what Id want.

The policy details state that these policies only cover New Zealand and Australian residents. Also, any pre-existing condition that you have had before is excluded from being covered. Interesting also, they dont cover any illness that is pandemic or epidemic... so chicken flu wont be covered... damn...bar one wrote:I use these peoples travel insurance - the backpacker policy is comprehensive

That is standard. Insurance is for unforeseen events. Why would they insure you for a medical problem incurred before the date that you bought the insurance? That would be silly.Doctor Seuss wrote:Any pre-existing condition that you have had before is excluded from being covered
The $350 plan from Figtree is fine. If you pay $1300 a year for medical insurance, you'd have to break your leg twice and stay in SOS for a couple of nights every year just to break even.
I also use Travel insurance as my cover. I pay around the same as Bar One.
Is there a time after you have been living here that you can no longer use travel insurance? The policy that Bar One provided does not seem to have any exclusions for length of time (a policy can be extended up to 12 months but that does not mean you cannot get a new policy). Does anybody know anything about this?

Dr Seuss, a notorious tight arse has indeed made sure he has more than broken even with his Insurance policy ... to hell with the pain, so long as you get the value eh Dr S?Bubble T wrote: If you pay $1300 a year for medical insurance, you'd have to break your leg twice and stay in SOS for a couple of nights every year just to break even.

The policy is under written by Alliance so similarly priced ones should be available in any market

My understanding is it's not an issue providing you are still officially resident in the country you bought the policy from. Work is about to get medical insurance for all of our staff. The policy seems ridiculously cheap at under $70. No medivac or compensation but you don't need it - just to Koastal's clinic - sounds great.

so is the Calmette really a morgue or are you just being sarcastic?
I guess sarcasm is the name of your game though.
I see this 1 cover linked above is backed by Alliance (Aust) and the claims are administered by Mondial (Aust).LeePee wrote:I also use Travel insurance as my cover. I pay around the same as Bar One.

I have used an identical 1 cover policy as this one before, and took out the 1 year 'frequent traveller' option. I thought I would be covered for 12 continuous months. Alas it turned out that although the policy was 12 months in length, and covered multiple journeys - the maximum period permitted away from Australia was 90 days for each journey.
So therefore it was practically useless to an expat like me, unless I happened to have touched base in Oz in the previous 90 days. Needless to say this condition was buried in the fine print.
I have just got a quote from Figtree Blue @ $630 for the base plan and $820 for the Super one. Seems to be about the best deal out there at the moment. Thoughts?
It is nothing short of a corrupt shit hole. I have been there with two Khmer couples when they gave birth. Both times if I hadnt of been there (barang to make the doctors actually do their job) the births would have been a fuckin disaster.Magic-Leaves wrote:Doctor Seuss wrote:First rule in cambodia is that if you are going into calmette Hospital you are going to be going out dead. I witnessed a father (not my friends) being handed his dead baby in a plastic bag that had no reason to be die - the lazy corrupt doctors there actively allowed that baby to die.
SHIT HOLE, SHIT HOLE, SHIT HOLE!!!!
Problem is that if you have an accident and, you are bleeding out, then this is where you go!!!!!!!
