Looks good, but the i5 with the same specs is 230$ less. Is the difference worth it if you don't use it for video editing etc?GMJS-440 wrote:In Cambodia, little bit more for those specsslavedog wrote:Was, that new, gmjs? I've been building gaming PC's as a business for a few years and I certainly wouldn't call the above "kickass".
However, shortcuts can easily be made. Easiest way to shave down the price is too not buy all the RGB led bling which is WAY overpriced because it appeals to kids.

No, I don't do video editing. Just need to be able to run graphics, e.g. Illustrator, PS, etc. But I do usually have a bout a dozen programmes open at once and I'm finding my i5 4GB ram starts to slow down towards the end of the day. So thinking that upgrading to i7 and 8GB would solve that.logos wrote:Looks good, but the i5 with the same specs is 230$ less. I'll pop in to Camtech some time, I've bought reconditioned second hand PCs from them before which work fine and are good value.

You could probably solve the slowdown with another stick of RAM, would certainly be the cheapest option.
Yeah, I did wonder about that. I don't really need a new machine if they can boost this one up a bit.
I'll pop in have a chat with them.
Cheers.

If you're not already using a SSD, get one. Biggest change you can make, especially now prices have dropped a lot. Even better go NVME on your SSD.
Cheers, will check it out.dv8inpp wrote:If you're not already using a SSD, get one. Biggest change you can make, especially now prices have dropped a lot. Even better go NVME on your SSD.

I took my machine to Camtech Saturday and they are boosting it to 16gb RAM. $40 per 4gb stick. 4 needed (can't use the old with the new it seems). Seems reasonable. Hopefully it will have the desired result.

Double check their work. Many motherboards only have 2 ram slots so you won't fit 4 x 4GB.slavedog wrote:I took my machine to Camtech Saturday and they are boosting it to 16gb RAM. $40 per 4gb stick. 4 needed (can't use the old with the new it seems). General price for 8gb isnt too far off that anyway.
DDR4 8gb for 75 a stick

DDR3L 8GB for 70 a stick

RAM will definitely help running illustrator and PS, but you'd also see a huge performance gain with a dedicated graphics card with a few GB of ram if you don't already have one.
Agree with the SSD advice. One big SSD as your boot drive, and your work and ai/ps cache on a separate drive.
Ok, thanks for that. I picked it up this afternoon. I'll plug it in tomorrow and see how it goes.epidemiks wrote:Double check their work. I do have an a lot of trust in these guys as they've been keeping my old machines going and supplying me with new ones for years. And they're just very nice people to deal with.

Machine now running well on 16GB RAM, huge improvement in performance. Should have done it months ago. Thanks all for the suggestions.
