9 month overstayed visa!! Friend in trouble.
A good friend of mine has been missing down the rabbit hole in Cambodia, and been totally off the radar for the last few months.
He's now finally back in touch, and also finally ready to leave Cambodia and begin getting himself back together. The problem is that he has no money and has now overstayed his visa by almost 9 months!!!
It seems that $5 per day for the 1st month, and then $6 per day after that are the penalty costs, this would total about $1600 now, but long overstays can even lead to imprisonment sometimes.
Can anyone advise what is the best way to deal with the bureaucracy there to get him out of Cambodia without being imprisioned, and also preferably without having to pay the full penalty?
I would really really appriciate any help or advise. I'm really worried about my friend. He needs to get out of Cambodia before we loose him again.
Thank you!!

I think it’s a flat $10 a day now. So for nine months he would owe about $2700.Aarrow2 wrote: It seems that $5 per day for the 1st month, and then $6 per day after that are the penalty costs, this would total about $1600 now, but long overstays can even lead to imprisonment sometimes.

^ Yep, flat $10 per day. If you surrender voluntarily and pay the fine you'll be deported only...if caught and unable to pay immediately, off to the Immigration cells. Oh, and blacklisted.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Take a dick pick in front of Angkor Wat and put it on Facebook, that usually does the trick.

It ain't that hard to cross borders illegally but then what does one do when in Thailand, Vietnam or Laos?
Do the time in the immigration cells, they ain't that bad, until the officials realise you ain't got no money , no one loves you to help you out, they will then kick yer arse out to Thailand free of charge because they don't need the hassle of feeding you. That was the case years ago though things may have changed.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Shit. $10 a day. I want to help him, but definitely not fronting up $2700. Is there somewhere you could bribe or bragian to get the cost down I wonder? How about help from his Embassy?
He can't get anything organised. Might have to go down sort everything out, and drag him out.
Thought about an illegal crossing alright. Wonder if you could somehow get into Thailand, then travel back to a border crossing, and just get into the 'arrivals' line? Then just get processed normally into Thailand.

The only real choices are to turn up and pay, or at least try to negotiate a reasonable amount for both parties. They might allow you to exit then but it's doubtful. They have tightened things up a lot recently and immigration was always tight. The other option is to "hand himself in" as a derelict homeless guy with no visa, then he will probably get sent straight to the immigration prison. It's just opposite the airport and by all accounts a total shithole. In its favor though it's much easier to get to than CC1/ Prey Sar which is way out. It's also much easier to visit, order food into etc than a normal bad-ass prison. It all depends on how much spondulicks and friends you got. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy with over-stayers, this country is relatively lenient with them even after recent tighten-ups, but try that in a whole lot of other countries and you can be in a whole world of shit. Not that sharing a cell with 23 West Africans and a couple of UK junkies in Pochentong is all that great, but it's livable.Aarrow2 wrote:Shit. $10 a day. Unless you are about to be murdered or "fitted-up" for heinous crimes I don't see why anyone would sneak across the border. There are of course plenty of "unofficial" crossings, but they are used by local people. Smugglers don't want Barangs fucking around and bringing attention to their routes. You need entry and exit stamps and for land crossings they have to coincide. Someone could cross to Thailand, and then claim they had lost their passport and try and claim for another at their embassy. They will likely get pulled because the records won't back up the dates for exit/ entry. So then they have illegally exited one country and illegally entered another, which is quite a bit stricter about these matters. Bad move all around.Thought about an illegal crossing alright. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
He could try finding a Dr that he can pay to write him a letter saying he is mentally ill
see how much he can raise with help
Maybe the dr could write this too
if not do the time he will learn to speak khmer quickly
could fry going thai border and bribing but thailand might hit him hard with fines or something and sod their immigration people get beaten to death

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't have that much sympathy either. But, got to help our buddies out, even when they are being idiots!!
I'll ask him to go to his embassy first with a well prepared story, maybe they can pull some strings with immigration.
Otherwise, just head for a border crossing, and try to negotiate and pay? Any crossing that's known to be more relaxed? Smaller one maybe, and hopefully get lucky.
Or would you go to a visa/immigration office in PP and try to negotiate and pay there?

Not so many options...
Claim your passport was lost.
Not sure. You need a police record, they will ask difficult questions and proof of your legal stay (copy of visa from guesthouse you have stayed, receipt from payment of your visa, stuff like that) and the DoI might have a record of your visa. Wouldn't be surprised if they keep track of it now.
Might work though. In that case the costs are a new passport and an exit visa.
Send someone else to the DoI to negotiate for you
Might save you a few bucks, they still want a substantial sum I guess.
Turn yourself in without any valuables.
You will spend some time in their 'guesthouse' opposite Pochentong. Won't be your nicest days. If they find out there's really no money they will put you a flight to Bangkok I guess. However, if you have friends bringing you nice food and stuff there it might take quite some time before they let you go, they will probably pressure you and your friend to cough up money.
Going to Thailand is not really an option. You can not exit Thailand because you have no entry stamp. You can not get an entry stamp because you have no exit stamp for Cambodia. If they find out you have no entry stamp when you depart Thailand they will treat you like an overstayer and probably deport you back to Cambodia and blacklist you as a illegal alien.
Personally I would go for option 2. The chance of option one going wrong is big, and you will lose all credibility in that case. You fucked up pretty well. Or your friend did.

As lax as we think paperwork is in this country, I’ll make a note that they are actually tracking visas now.
My multiple entry visa is in my old passport (ran out of pages), and last time when I re-entered I offered the guy my two passports, and he said there was no need for that as he can look me up. So with my new passport (and new number), he located my old visa. I think they track it by name, birthdate, and nationality.
So, I would say to try and hire an agent to resolve it.

I think I was told it is more than that, in that they can match up an individual who entered on different dates using passports from two different countries.Miguelito wrote:As lax as we think paperwork is in this country, I’ll make a note that they are actually tracking visas now.

Probably name and birthday. Could be fingerprints as well, they’ve started back with that.violet wrote:I think I was told it is more than that, in that they can match up an individual who entered on different dates using passports from two different countries.Miguelito wrote:As lax as we think paperwork is in this country, I’ll make a note that they are actually tracking visas now.
