Stumbled upon this article about Douc langurs apes, which are uniquely found in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Quite remarkable looking little guys.

I found one previous mention of them on 440, in a 2008 post about Endangered Monkey Species Thriving in Cambodia

Not only have I heard of them, I have seen them in the flesh many times (though never in Cambodia).

Different than a gibbons. According to the article, they are "an “old world” monkey found only east of the Mekong River in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, douc langurs are one of the most strangely beautiful primates in the world. They come in three “shank colors”: Red (Pygathrix nemaeus), Black (Pygathrix nigripes), and Gray (Pygathrix cinerea), and they are all listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as endangered or critically endangered."Jep wrote:[

The Gibbon family (Hylobatidae) is divided into four genera based on their diploid chromosome number: Hylobates, Hoolock, Nomascus, and Symphalangus -- Doucs are family Cercopithecidae, Subfamily Colobinae, and Genus Pygathrix.
Yeah sure Haha, I m sorry, my post was an attempt at a pun. I know jack shit about monkeys;

Soon to disappear entirely, as are many SE Asian wildlife species
Birds, I think, are the most criticality-endangered group after mammals, Hanno?

Absolutely. Widespread habitat loss, excessive hunting and trapping. Cambodia is a remaining refuge for birds that have disappeared elsewhere in the region, but the rapid development does not bode well.vladimir wrote:Soon to disappear entirely, as are many SE Asian wildlife species

Yes, especially around 3 PM when they turn up in their pajamas and munch on sour fruit and hot dogs for a while before getting done up for the beer-goggled foreigner imbeciles who will be wandering around later. So pretty.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
